Here's the reference:

Kara is the eldest child of David and Cindy, since moving to Toronto for her little brother's surgery (UofGOpenEdMultimedia, 2018a), Kara has been isolating herself from her family and people in her classroom (UofGOpenEdMultimedia, 2018c). She feels disconnected from herself and her community since moving to Toronto (UofGOpenEdMultimedia, 2018c). Our team believes that Kara has depression since Kara is self-isolating and not willing to form connections (UofGOpenEdMultimedia, 2018c). Depression is a mental health illness that affects your behaviour and your well-being (Cui, 2015, para. 1). Children diagnosed with depression may experience some common strengths and challenges. Some strengths include going to school and continuing with their daily routine (waking up, brushing their teeth...); this, in turn, reflects resiliency (CAMH, n.d, resilience section). Some challenges include disassociating themselves from others, little to no motivation, and self-injury (CDC, 2021, depression section).

Children diagnosed with depression may exhibit a common strength called resiliency. Children exhibit resiliency as they overcome their battle with depression (CAMH, n.d, resilience section). They are resilient by getting up every day and going to school and by continuing with their daily routine (waking up, brushing their teeth, getting dressed...). One of Kara's strengths is attending school (UofGOpenEdMultimedia, 2018c). Even though she lives in a new city and feels disconnected from the environment, she still tries to make an effort by going to school. Another strength that Kara shows is she is open to getting counselling and meeting others in the community (UofGOpenEdMultimedia, 2018e). This, in turn, reflects resiliency as she is trying to overcome her battle with depression and trying to create meaningful connections in the new environment.

Children diagnosed with depression can have challenges such as disassociating themselves from others, having little to no motivation, and showing self-injury (CDC, 2021, depression section). Kara has exhibited these challenges; she has been disassociating herself from children at her school and is not making meaningful connections with others (UofGOpenEdMultimedia, 2018b). David and Cindy also feel that Kara is self-isolating (UofGOpenEdMultimedia, 2018c).  Another challenge that Kara is exhibiting is having little to no motivation; this is evident since she isn't trying to connect with the environment or children in her class (UofGOpenEdMultimedia, 2018b). Lastly, Cindy, Kara's mother, is also concerned that she will continue to harm herself (UofGOpenEdMultimedia, 2018c).

In conclusion, if a child is struggling with depression, it is essential to recognize the interests that the child was engaged in before. For instance, David and Cindy mentioned that nature is a part of who they are, and ever since moving to Toronto, their children have lost that connection to nature (UofGOpenEdMultimedia, 2018c). Since connecting with nature is essential to Kara, I think it is imperative to implement activities that can elicit those interests within Kara again and, in turn, can positively impact her mental health state.
