Running head: THE AFFECTS OF COVID-19 ON A STUDENTS MENTAL HEALTH THE AFFECTS OF COVID-19 ON A STUDENTS MENTAL HEALTH Damiya Clark Department of Psychology, Stevenson University 1 STUDENT’S MENTAL HEALTH AMID A GLOBAL PANDEMIC 2 Abstract Background Student's mental wellbeing has been an area of concern, and national policies regarding home quarantine have escalated the problem for this vulnerable population. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a source of mental and psychological issues for different people. This study will assess the impact that the pandemic has had on student's mental and psychological wellbeing. Objective To assess students' mental and psychological impact due to the period of upheaval perpetrated by a global virus by comparing findings obtained from six journals addressing these effects. Methods They are using a Likert scale to quantitatively assess the relevance of six articles in addressing the implication of mental and psychological wellbeing of students to the global pandemic (Covid 19) and their relation. Results The sources were credible, relevant, and satisfactorily addressed the topic except two. One focused on parents as the subjects. The other article compared mental problems between the population in mandatory quarantine conditions compared to the general population. Students struggled with depression, anxiety, and stress, with the female gender being more affected. Conclusions Students have been affected by the global pandemic in several ways. The most prevalent mental and psychological issues include stress, anxiety, and depression, affecting their quality of work and reducing their ability to concentrate on their studies. Female students have generally been more affected than the male counterparts, and the stress is more inclined on their health and STUDENT’S MENTAL HEALTH AMID A GLOBAL PANDEMIC 3 safety and that of their families and loved ones. The second effect has been observed in the form of a strain in relationships between friends and family. Introduction The coronavirus was a contagious virus detected first in the Wuhan City of China in 2019 December. The virus caught the world by surprise as it exposed the flaw within the communities, governance, and healthcare systems, evident through how fast it spread and how difficult it was to control. The virus is transmitted through sneezing, coughing, and touching contaminated surfaces. Within a short time, the virus had crossed borders and continents, affecting all nations adversely. The rapid spread has been necessitated by globalization. It has made the world virtually smaller, with advancements in technology necessitating the movement of people from one place to another sooner than an infected person becomes symptomatic. To stop the spread of this virus, drastic measures that proved to be most effective have to be put in place. That included reducing physical human contact possibilities in everyday environments that are typically crowded, maintaining high sanitation, quarantine of all infected individuals, and, now, several vaccines with different success rates. Schools and offices were temporarily shut down, requiring learning to be conducted virtually through a social platform, disruption of the school calendars. The delay of graduations and clearances all contributed to the mental disturbance of students in different degrees, projecting in the form of depression, stress, anxiety, uncertainty, and insomnia, requiring that the education system adapt various interventions to ensure the wholesome wellbeing of their students. Method STUDENT’S MENTAL HEALTH AMID A GLOBAL PANDEMIC 4 All six articles addressed the effects of the current pandemic on the mental welfare of people. However, two articles digressed in terms of the population under study. While most of the articles documented the effects on students, the last two addressed the people of parents and individuals in quarantine conditions. Collectively, two themes can be established from the analysis by focusing on the effects of the pandemic. The first theme encapsulates stress, anxiety, and depression and the psychological impact that the study population has experienced. The second theme encompasses strains in relationships among family and friends. Notably, some articles identified both themes among their study population. The method used a Likert scale to assess all the six articles as guided by three questions. The first question considers how the articles relate to the research. Next, the second measure is the degree to which they link to this particular study and why they are essential. Lastly, their relation to the overarching topic gets researched. 1. How do they relate to other research? An analysis of the relation of the findings in the article to the Covid-19 pandemic and its effect on mental health. 2. How do they relate to the study, and why are they important? An analysis of how the articles have focused the research to using students as their study population. 3. How do they relate to the overarching topic? The overarching themes are brought out in the research articles. Theme 1: Stress, anxiety, and depression Theme 2: Strain in relationships Theme 1 (Stress, anxiety, and depression) STUDENT’S MENTAL HEALTH AMID A GLOBAL PANDEMIC 5 The first journal article sought to address the effect that the current global pandemic has had on university students, and the results brought out to relate with impact from the first theme. The research entailed the participation of 322 university students. The data obtained from the 97.5% response rate highlighted depression, anxiety, and stress as the main struggles the students went through (Aylie, Mekonen & Mekuria, 2020). The hierarchical order of the mental health conditions was a priority at an occurrence rate of 32.5%, anxiety at 27.7%, and depression at 21.2%. Depression risk is further enhanced by specific attributes such as separation from family, family members contracting the virus, and absent social support. A break increased anxiety risk from family and low family incomes. Substance abuse also spiked, with many resolving to drugs and substances. With this information, the suggestion was that the government and learning institutions should offer crisis-oriented psychological sessions to students to reduce mental and psychological problems. The second journal article entailed research on 162 students in New Jersey. The students completed a cross-sectional survey which was very comprehensive. It addressed how knowledgeable the students are regarding the virus, sources of information, behavioral changes, and everyday difficulties in getting a concise diagnosis of the problems that the pandemic has caused in their lives (Kecojevic, Basch, Sullivan & Davi, 2020). The feedback proved that students were well aware of basic facts regarding the disease, prevention methods, and credible sources for gathering information. However, with the need to change their routines and behaviors to meet public health recommendations, they experienced difficulty and mental distress. Depression was expected due to the inability to focus on schoolwork and the loss of employment. Anxiety was also common, worrying about the future and the government's plans regarding the education system. Somatization was more prevalent among students who had STUDENT’S MENTAL HEALTH AMID A GLOBAL PANDEMIC 6 trouble focusing and constantly researched the developments taking place regarding the disease. Females, in particular, were more prone to perceived stress and failure to focus on academic work. The third article analyzed the psychological effects that the pandemic has had on students aged 16-25 years within India. The response was obtained from 351 students diverse in their attributes to give a comprehensive review. The researchers concluded that female students were more susceptible to psychological and mental issues as they are naturally more worried about their future and health (Moghe, Kotecha & Patil, 2020). They also had feelings of uncertainty and helplessness, with more outbursts of frustration than the males. Male students were more likely to indulge in self-harm and getting withdrawn. Therefore, society needs to be informed of the magnitude of this problem and take up necessary interventions to remedy the problem early enough. The fourth article assessed the effects of the pandemic on the mental health of college students in America through online surveys. The students were struggling with stress and anxiety, mainly about their health and loved ones (Son, Hegde, Smith, Wang & Sasangohar, 2020). As a result, they had trouble concentrating in classwork, affecting their academic performance and confidence. The fifth journal compared the pandemic's mental effects between populations under mandatory quarantine and the general population. The population of people in quarantine environments showed more prevalence in depression, anxiety, and insomnia when weighed against the general population (Wang et al., 2021). The settings in quarantine facilities, where the patients had limited interaction with others and friends and families, were hostile and negatively affected their mental wellbeing. They had trouble sleeping, were generally more worried about STUDENT’S MENTAL HEALTH AMID A GLOBAL PANDEMIC 7 their welfare, and were anxious about the future head. Although the general population expressed similar concerns, their situations were different based on their environments. The last article focused the study on assessing the adverse effects that the pandemic has had on the mental health of parents whose children are students and explored the influencing factors in China. Parents were observed to suffer from depression and anxiety at a positivity occurrence rate of 6.1% and 4.0%, respectively (Wu et al., 2020). The parents most affected were those residing in central China, with minor anxiety levels observed in parents whose children are in colleges. Conflicts within families also made it worse, increasing stress and depression compared to harmonious families. Other causative factors included marital dissatisfaction, lack of social support, and a history of mental illness. Theme 2 (Strain in relationships) The fourth journal source also identified another psychological issue: strains in social relationships with friends and family due to lockdowns and cessation of movement due to social distancing protocol. Others had trouble sleeping and adapting to new schedules. However, the education system ensured a smooth transition in online learning and tailored the curriculum to be more relaxing. Very few linked the sources of stress to being academically induced. STUDENT’S MENTAL HEALTH AMID A GLOBAL PANDEMIC 8 References Aylie, N., Mekonen, M., & Mekuria, R. (2020).
