A father should be someone that loves you unconditionally but also structures you. Fathers should be very protective of their children and should always have the backs of their kids. My father and I have a very close relationship and I know that he would do whatever it takes to protect me. He can be harsh at times and sometimes his sarcasm and jokes annoy me, but I know he does everything out of love.

In The Bernie Mac Show, Bernie takes care of his sister’s three children after she begins suffering from drug abuse. Bernie struggles to be a father figure as it is all new to him although he tries as hard as he can. It is apparent that he cares about the kids as he takes them to get   medicine, donuts, and tucks them in. He does seem to have trouble while taking care of them and he tells the camera that it's hard work, but the smile that he gives after tucking the little boy in shows how much he is grateful for being able to take care and protect the kids.

In Black-ish, the father tries very hard to show love to his children. While they are in the stage of growing up and are a sassy and ungrateful of his love at times, at other times they prove that they love their father very much. There is some juxtaposition on this show as Andre, the main character, is father to four kids, and Andre's relationship with his father is also portrayed on the show. These relationships are very different. Andre's father does not show much or really any love to Andre, while Andre shows nothing but love to his children.

I believe that both of the father figures in these television shows are exemplary fathers. They show love when it counts yet they also can be sarcastic and strict when they need to be. Even though they give tough love at times, they make it apparent that their love is still strong, and although they get frustrated with their children at times, they never stop putting their needs first.

Insecure Essay

Insecure focuses on main character Issa Dee and her friend Molly who have takes on the single life and the taken life. The title of the show is fitting as it follows Issa while she has trouble figuring out what moves to make and what choices are best for her. The title also relates to Molly as she is experiencing trouble being single as well. With insecurities and second-guessing constantly getting in the way of their love lives, Issa and Molly have to fight against their insecurities to do what is ultimately best for them.

Issa is insecure about her current relationship with Lawrence. He cancels their plans of going out so that they can stay home and watch television. Issa is insecure about this since she doesn't think this is something she wants in a man, while her ex boyfriend messaged her on Facebook that day. She decides to go over to see him, only to grow insecure within that relationship as well.

Issa is also very insecure about her professional life. She works a youth program and stands in front of kids who are uninterested in what she had to say. Day after day, this makes her grow more insecure since she is not receiving any accolade for her daily work. Since Issa is inse­ cure about most things in her life, it makes the title of the show very fitting while her insecurities help push the plot along since most of the conflicts stern from her insecurities.

Atlanta Essay

In the pilot episode of Atlanta , we gain insight into the life of Earn, portrayed by Donald Glover, his "baby momma," Van, whom he is intimate with but on rather confusing terms with, and his cousin Alfred who goes by his rapper name "Paper Bai." It is revealed that Earn does not make much money working at an airport kiosk and he is worried that Van might soon kick him out of the house.

In the first season episode titled "B.A.N." on Atlanta, it almost appears as if you are watching a completely different show despite the appearance of Paper Bai. This episode features a show within a show complete with commercials that focus on black culture and stereotypes. In this episode, the focus is on Paper Bai and a statement that he made where he said he would not hookup with Caitlyn Jenner. He is getting slammed for this by a psychologist and talk show host as they twist his words and make him out to be transphobic while all he said is that he wouldn't be interested in hooking up with Caitlyn. This episode does not feature Earn of Van at all.

While both of these episodes are entertaining and crucial to the storyline and meaning of the show, if this were a viewer's first time watching, it seems almost as if they are completely different shows. The only similarity between the two episodes is the portrayal of African-American stereotypes and culture throughout the episodes, especially when Paper Bai is being slammed for something he did not say while his race is also being used against him. Overall, both episodes are well put together and portray the life of rappers and black men in Atlanta.
