The Tell-Tale Heart is a good example of a crazy person point of view in the horror genre. The Tell-TaleHeart follows are narrator going crazy because of the eye of the old man he takes care of, he describes the eye as being one of a vulture's eye, he kills the old man because he starts hearing the beating of his heart then hides the body when the police come but exposes his crime because he went insane. In 1809 Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston to two traveling actors, Poe was orphaned by the time he was three years old, he had moved to Virginia where his friends and family raised him. He was a journalist and wrote poems, he also invented the modern day mystery, when his wife died he was deeply saddened then he died two years later. The story, "The Tell-Tale Heart ", by Edgar Allan Poe, uses the following Characteristics: plot, suspense, and crazy person point of view which all highlight for the audience why this short story fits into the Horror Genre.

The plot of The Tell-Tale Heart helps bring horror to the story. The narrator has to take care of the old man. He says the old man has the eye of a vulture, the eye drives our narrator insane. The narrator attempts to kill the old man one night but he has to have the old man's eyes open when he does it. One night the old man wakes up when he's snooping around and the narrator starts hearing the beating of the old man's heart. This drives him to finally kill the old man with a pillow because he worries others shall hear the beating of the old man's heart. He hides the body chopped up in the floorboards. The police visit the next day because they got reports of the old man's loud scream of terror. The narrator fully convinces the police he's innocent and allows them to sit down and take a break. He places his chair right above the floorboards the body is hidden under. The police have no clue what the narrator had done but the narrator snaps and exposes his crime to them. The plot adds to the horror of the story because of all the combined elements within it.

How does The Tell-Tale Heart build suspense exactly? The image of the "eye of a vulture" being repeated creates suspense because the old man's eye is the narrator's motive to eventually kill the old man. Everytime the eye is mentioned we get closer to the old man dying, they also describe the eye in great detail. In paragraph 2,Edgar Allan Poe's "Tell Tale Heart", he writes, "He had the eye of a vulture-a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees-very gradually-I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever." The cited text from paragraph 2 shows how the eye creates suspense. The eye is revealed as the motive to kill the old man. So when mentioning the eye past this point you feel suspense because we know that at some point something terrible is going to happen to the old man. The eye is also described in great detail. In paragraph 4,Edgar Allan Poe's "Tell Tale Heart", he writes, "And this did for seven long nights every night just at midnight-but I found the eye always closed; and so it was impossible to do the work; for it was not the old man who vexed me, but his Evil Eye. “The cited text from paragraph 4 builds suspense because it describes all the times he would have killed the old man if his eye was open. So when his eye eventually opens would be when he attempts to kill the old man.

Where is the crazy person's point of view shown in the story? The narrator's opinion of himself in paragraphs 1-2 makes him seem less reliable. He is trying to defend himself by explaining that he isn't mad which just makes him seem crazy. In paragraph 1, Edgar Allan Poe's "Tell Tale Heart ", he writes, "why will you say that I am mad? These diseases had sharpened my senses not destroyed ""How, then, am I mad?" The cited text from paragraph 1shows the narrator is unreliable. This is because he repeats that he is not mad and the word mad. He's defending himself as not mad which just makes him seem madder. Him talking about how amazing his way of hiding the body was and so on shows he is clearly not mentally well. This adds horror to the story because we aren't sure what's being left out because their point of view is distorting the story.

In conclusion, The Tell-Tale Heart perfectly shows how to create a thrilling horror story. The text fits into the horror genre because of its great plots that use suspense and a crazy person's point of view. The use of suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen. While the crazy person's point of view makes you wonder about left out details and the reality of the situation. The text is important because it's a great example of how to create a horror story. We still read this text today because it's still scary despite how old it is.
