Abstract

Videos in Whose Honor is a film that critical looks at a long running controversy of using Indian mascots and names for sports teams.  The Slip of the Tongue is a film about unrealistic beauty standards, and importance of your ancestral history. Both were produced to teach the negative effects of white control and power historically and present to this decade.  Each of the videos have a different tone and genre to persuade the audience of this and to critically think more about this problem.

In the articles, In Whose Honor and Slip of the Tongue, the authors and producers convey how white supremacy negatively affects racial groups.  In watching In Whose Honor, the video shows Charlene Teters expressing a tone of harsh emotions towards the mascot of the Indiana College.  In watching, Slip of the Tongue the poem is read at a fast pace and to confuse watchers and set a tone of uncertainty as it unfolds how European companies persuade women to think they are less than and to bury themselves with makeup.  Both authors of the videos target their audience towards companies, schools and people to be aware of the racism from white superiority.

According to In Whose Honor, the European supporters believe that their Indian mascot is "honoring" Native people, however this is untrue, racist and bias as this is only shown from the Teters viewpoint.  Teters tone is clear, as is her facial expressions, especially when she cries, "My kids sank in their seats, and I knew that I couldn't be here without addressing that issue." This embarrassed and disappointed tone is essential to prove that this event was indeed traumatic, controlling and life changing that made her protest against the college. Another racist viewpoint is illustrated when Susan Gravenhorst states, ".... the Indian mascot is a focal point where he draws the community, the student body and faculty together". Other college faculty like Rick Wrinkle says, "I have seen the performance many times and found it nothing but inspiring" both of these statements indicate a very convincing tone in a positive way that having an Indian mascot is okay to have, when in reality has a huge effect on the outcome of how Native Americans are seen today.

In the video, The Slip of the Tongue, the author Adriel Luis creates a tonal shift in the article, in the beginning of the poem the tone is slower paced when he says his pick-up lines to the girl, controlled, and casual. Then the tone changes in the middle of the poem to be faster and mean from the girl getting off ended about being asked about her "ethnic makeup."  The female character says, "I don't need no powdery foundation to be beautiful and acceptable in society" and implying that her natural skin color is enough.  She also expresses the importance of how colonizers make indigenous women feel inadequate as makeup is just an anglicized, colonized, commodified utility.  She states, "My sisters have been programmed to consume, forcing them to cover up their natural state."  This female character 's tone is bold, brave, confident and overpowers the male character.

The genre of In Whose Honor, is portrayed as non-fiction video, as it is based on historical prose and becomes dramatic towards the audience.  The video is non-fiction because this is based on real life events that have happened years ago and are part of factual history.  It is produced as history because it transfers you back in time to when the events happened.  It was filmed to be in prose format because the events were in articles and the video has quotes from people of both sides and has a thesis statement it works to prove.  The video is dramatic because of the reactions from chief mascot of emotions both negative and positive from the interviewed people.  Feelings of embarrassment, anger, insult, humiliation, lack of power, shock and disgust are amongst the feelings expressed about the chief mascot. These genres are essential to prove that white supremacy is over taking schools and normalizing racism towards Native people.

The Genre in The Slip of the Tongue is expressed as poetry, dramatic, and fictional.  Since the video is a poem, the elements of poetry in the video is important because it conveys the importance of the powerful rhythming, and syllable counts of what the characters says in the video.  The drama in the video is illustrated visually and through tone and words from the characters, with their emotional reactions and what they do. It is fictional because the author expresses their own critism, social commentary, and reflections on humanity, by using imaginary characters. This is shown with the situation he creates with the male character hitting on the female character and showing him up with her knowledge of what beauty is. All of these genres demonstrate that women shouldn't change themselves to fit European standards of beauty.

Tone and genre are both important tools that are used by both videos.  Both videos use these tools to express the authors opinion on White supremist control through companies, and schools.  In Whose Honor, we see a historical, factual and persuading point to prove this fact that white supremacy exists.  On the other hand, The Slip of the Tongue, uses poetry, dramatic tone, and pace of the video to prove that there is white supremacy makes women of color feel less than.  But both together prove that white people still work to control non-white people.

From watching, In Whose Honor and The Slip of the Tongue, Cal Cayaditto questions the videos asking, "Were the videos posing questions after the video?" and "Is that what the videos want you to think?" Cayaditto states, "I believe from analyzing the videos they want you to think and steer your thinking pot on the problems."  From this information that Cayaditto states, the videos want you to critically think about the future effect towards people of color.  In conclusion from analyzing the genre, tone and critically thinking about the videos, I have come to prove my thesis on how both are focusing on how racism is affecting people of color and how they are being controlled by white supremacy.
