In Norse Mythology Ginnungagap was the emptiness before there was a world. In Greek Mythology it was called Chaos. In the Norse Myth they tell us about a fiery land called Muspell that was to the far south, in the far north was a dark and frozen land called Niflheim. (Big Myth, n.d.) In Greek Mythology the first three beings were mother earth, underworld, and love. Mother earth made father sky, mountains, and sea. In the Norse Myth they say after many years the giant Ymir emerged, along with a cow, this cow licked the salt from the Ice Mountains. While the cow was licking the Ice Mountains the god Buri and his goddess wife were found. They had a son named Bar, Bar had a son named Odin, who became the king of all the gods. In the Greek Myth, three beings came to be Mother Earth (Gaea), the Underworld (Tartarus) and Love (Eros), because Gaea was alone she made father sky (Uranus), Mountains (Ourea) and Sea (Pontus). (Rosenberg, 2006)

In Norse mythology the creator was the death of Ymir his huge body formed the earth, his blood the sea, his flesh the land, his bones the mountains, and his hair the trees. Odin and the others gods that killed Ymir used his skull to make the sky and held it up with four huge pillars. Then Odin took fiery sparks form Muspell and created the sun and the moon, which he sat in the sky, this made the ice melt and plants started to grow. (Big Myth, n.d.) Odin named this Midgard or " The Middle Land", but this land still needed people so he took two fallen trees one elm and the other ash and created the first man who he called Ask and the first woman that he called Embla form these two the entire human race came to be. Ymir two giant sister were still mad at Odin for killing their brother and were not happy about him creating humans so they found the tree of life and marked a line for every human life at the end of which the cut a deep line to make sure that humans would never become as strong as the gods. (Big Myth, n.d.) In the Greek Myth Gaea married Uranus, Uranus ruled over all being that came to be. Gaea and Uranus had three Hundred-Handed Giants, these giants had fifty heads and fifty arms extending from each shoulder. Then they had three Cyclopes that had only one eye, set in the middle of his forehead. They were expert craftsmen, and they later built the palaces for the gods on Mount Olympus.

Uranus feared, and hated the six children so as each child was born, Uranus took the child from his mother, bound him, and hurled him deep into the earth. (Rosenberg, 2006) The children fell for nine days and nine nights, finally landing in Tartarus, on the tenth day. There Uranus kept the children far from the surface of the earth and the light of the sun. Uranus was proud of what he had done because now he could rule without fear of any challenge, and he expected to rule forever. Gaea was outraged by her husband's actions, longed for her children, and ended up hating him for what he had done to their children. She knew that now was not the time to take revenge so she buried her feelings deep in her heart and quietly waited for the right time. The children Gaea gave birth to were the thirteen Titans. They and their children became the oldest generation of Greek gods. (Rosenberg, 2006)

The Norse Myth had Ask and Embla that started all human life on earth, Odin gave us the wind, rain, fire. (Big Myth, n.d.) In the Greek Myth it started with Gaea, her grandchildren ended up ruling the wind, rain, and fire. (Rosenberg, 2006)

While reading about both myths, I found that they only have two similarities, the first being that is that they are both about God and Goddess, and the second is the fact that one God killed another one to rule. The two resources I used had a few differences, one is that the Norse myth says earth was created when a male god died, In the Greek it was that Gaea was mother earth and that she not only created earth but she was in fact earth itself. In Norse mythology Odin created the first man and woman, in Greek mythology it was Zeus. In Norse Mythology Odin and his children lived in Asgard and humans live in Midgard. In Greek Mythology Zeus and his children lived on Mount Olympus and humans live on what he called grain-giving earth.

I believe that creation myths are important because it has always given us a feeling of belong to something bigger, and that we are not alone. It not only gives people something to believe in but it also shows them how they should act and behave. In the time that these two myths were popular people lived by what they thought the Gods and Goddesses expected of them. While not everyone believes in these two myths today, reading though the many different ones, showed me how much of Christianity is like the myths of the past.
