As a child growing up in the 80's, one of my favorite movies that would have my eyes glued to the screen when it came on from start to finish was the original 1981 classic, Clash of the Titans. I was fascinated by the story, the visuals, and the mythical creatures. I was always drawn to stories, and movies, that pitted your classic villain versus a hero. Clash of the Titans had it all, and followed the heroic journey of Perseus, the son of the Greek god Zeus. Fast forward to 2010, and a reboot of the classic was released in the theaters. Being an adult with children now myself, I had to take my kids to see the new adaptation of the movie. The love affair that I had with this movie as a child, made it a no brainer for me when it was time to pick a movie to review for this assignment.

The 2010 remake of Clash of the Titans was written by Beverley Cross, and directed by Louis Leterrier. The movie starts off slow, as it takes its time setting up the origin of the main character Perseus, and displaying beautiful familiar backdrops made famous in the world of Greek mythology.  The film accurately depicts the environments, atmosphere, and they way of life that is depicted in myths that we read about in our books during this time period. The visual elements and detail of the characters in the film are brought together beautifully, in order to create a rich and believable mythological world. There are numerous similarities between the films time period and characters, and the characters and locations displayed during the time period that is covered in the Greece and Rome section of our text books. (Rosenberg 82-288)

One of the areas of dissimilarities between our readings in the book, and the film, is the depiction that the film makes of Hades being a disgruntled god hell bent on taking out his brother Zeus. This viewpoint in the film just appears to be an added twist to enhance the plot for Hollywood. The similarities helped to add plenty of depth to the film, by drawing the viewer into ancient Rome, and giving them a glimpse of what life would be like to live during that time period. Once the film gets past the initial slow buildup of establishing the main characters, and telling all of the different back stories, Clash of the Titans explodes into action with an epic battle between humans who are accompanying Perseus on his quest, and giant scorpions, created by Hades powerful magic. The animation and action sequences in this scene are simply amazing, and keep you glued to the screen cheering for the for the underdog heroes, and sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to see what is going to happen next!  In between the action sequences, there are brilliantly directed moments that highlight the moments throughout Perseus's quest that he begins to realize that he is much more than a man, and has the favor of the gods in his corner. One such moment that was beautifully done in this film, is when Perseus happens upon a flock of the mythical Pegasus creatures. They are beautiful, and white, and glow like angels as they graze in the fields. Then, just as Perseus gets close enough to reach out and touch one of them, a massive black Pegasus descends from the heavens, and lands at the feet of Perseus. This mighty creature has never been ridden by man, but was sent to Perseus as a gift from his father Zeus to help him complete his quest. The further that Perseus continues on his quest, the less he can deny that he is truly the son of Zeus, and that he must embrace his destiny. The moment in the film that I believe was the point at which Perseus truly embraces his status as a demigod hero, is the scene when he prepares to enter the lair of the mythical monster Medusa. This epic scene was hands down my favorite one of the film. You are riddled with suspense as Perseus and his men look for her throughout her lair. She toys with them as she takes them down one by one. The tension, action, and visual flare of this scene, was one of the best I've seen in any movie!

Although Clash of the Titans has many flaws, due to its lack of accuracy on how it depicts some of its mythical characters, it is still an amazing and entertaining action movie. If you are a fan of a good action flick, or are someone who enjoys myths and legends, then I must say that I recommend that you see this movie!
