Argumentative essay about the Noble Prize in Literature

The Nobel Prize in Literature has always been granted to a writer or poet. In 2016, Bob Dylan became the first non-writer to win the prize, creating history. Dylan is a brilliant musician who has previously been rewarded with a lifetime achievement award by the Grarnrnys' awarding organisation called the NARAS (Dylan, Hammond, & Shelton, 2005). Since he received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016, there have been numerous arguments about whether or not he deserved it. I think it's appropriate that he received the Nobel Prize in Literature; his songs are a kind of literature.

Bob Dylan's song "Desolation Row" was featured in the 2006 edition of the Oxford Book of American Poetry (Lehman & Brehm, 2006).  The scope of literature was extended by Bob Dylan's Nobel Prize. Several distinguished writers and poets have openly supported Bob Dylan's nomination. Billy Collins was reported in an interview as claiming that Bob Dylan is one of the 2percent of songwriters whose songs are intriguing when read aloud he considers him a poet (Saha, 2019).  A song is basically just poetry placed to music, hence there aren't many variations to be discovered in either the poetry or the lyrics. Bob Dylan merited to be awarded the Nobel Prize in literature since, ultimately, he is both a poet and songwriter.

Furthermore, Bob Dylan was also recognised for introducing new literary vocabulary into the canon of American popular music. Before he earned the Nobel Prize, Bob Dylan's contributions to the emergence of Folk-Rock impacted musical trends and inspired decades.  In addition, the great majority of his songs are regarded as some of the best ever composed. "His song 'Like a Rolling Stone' has attained legendary status in the decades since its release; many, including Dylan himself, have seen it as emblematic of a sea shift in American music" (Dylan, Hammond & Shelton, 2005). It seems unfair that literature receives a Nobel Prize but music does not.

Some individuals have claimed that there's no relationship between music and literary writings. Those who think there is a connection between music and literature are thus seeking to defend the Nobel committee's terrible judgment. Potter, 2016) concurs that music and literature are two examples of distinctly separate creative styles that use distinct mediums.

Literature is related with the conveyance of ideas via the written word, while music is described as the collection of separate sounds (Potter, 2016). According to Potter, (2016) to Dylan was thus never eligible for the prize, since his songs were never acknowledged as literature. Some could argue that it would be detrimental to the Nobel Prize community if Bob Dylan were given the prize instead of a more worthy author. For me it seems unjust that the only subject in which musicians may receive a Nobel Prize is in literature. But, regardless of the number of Grammys or other honours an artist may get, nothing can compare to the Nobel Prize. Until a separate prize is established for songwriters, musicians should be considered poets and so eligible for the Nobel Prize in literature. As one of the greatest artists of all time, Bob Dylan merited to be awarded the Nobel Prize in literature. Even poets have likened his lyrics to their own writings. Bob Dylan's receiving of the Nobel Prize in Literature righted an injustice by recognising musicians for the first time. Bob Dylan's triumph has fundamentally changed the situation. With each of these arguments, it is very evident that Bob Dylan was deserving of the Nobel Prize.
