The Leadership Interview Essay

An interview involves a direct conversation between the interviewer and the interviewee. In other words, the interviewer directly asks the questions to the interviewee. Thus, the interview discussed below is a conversation between the interviewer and some interviewees working in a non-profit nursing home organization. During the interview, the interviewer aimed to know more about the organization itself, the goals, mission, challenges, achievements, management styles used in the organization, employees' motivation, career path, managerial skills, and how the organization responded covid-19. Thus, this leadership interview essay summarizes the interview and the interview's key observations by discussing the organization's mission, vision, goals, achievements, leadership traits of the administration, and leadership management styles used in the organization's facilitation.

Organization Description

A non-profit nursing home is an organization that does not bring any profit to the owner but receives funds from different organizations to sustain it (Huston, 2021. Further, the organization is tax-exempt; hence it does not pay most of the taxes. However, the owner of the organization must apply for tax-exempt status through IRS. The organization has both paid and volunteer staff. Non-profit nursing can be started by an individual or a group of people. For instance, the organization dissected in this essay was established in 1996 by a group of friends to reach the community and make people feel safe in the nursing home.

Organization's Mission, Goals, Achievement, and Challenges

The organization's mission involves giving hope to the community and contributing to their health and well-being through better care. On the other hand, the organization's goal is to improve the quality of life for vulnerable people at the community level. However, the organization faces various challenges. The challenges that hiders the organization's operations include;

  • Pressure to show results - The organization has to show results for objectives, such as, social impact; which are very hard to measure.
  • Lack of stable income leading to budgeting issues - At times, income may be unstable throughout the year, and the project might be delayed because the administrative cost is the priority.
  • The funding from the government is limited - Grants from the government may not be enough to cover the expenses of the organization, and some of the issues are left out, and the organization must work on a tight budget.
  • Decreasing demand due to increasing success - After attaining the objective of an organization, the demand for services reduces.
  • Consistency in retaining the right talent over other organizations - The organization struggle to maintain the position after winning the battle for talent.
  • Ignoring the bottom line because non-profit nursing homes do not run like a business -  In many instances, the organization focuses mainly on social impact objectives and forgets the business objective.
  • Increase in need of non-profit nursing organizations - Due to poverty, many people are facing economic hardship. Therefore, a non-profit organization has to act fast to save lives and reduce the spread of diseases.

Despite having many challenges, the organization have achieved various achievements, which include;

  • Access to a registered professional agent who ensures that critical court documents are served if the facility is sued.
  • The organization has achieved credibility that makes the donors have more interest.
  • Provision of health care services to the community - The organization can now easily reach community members, mobilize and create awareness, which is very key in attaining success.
  • Access to grants - The organization receives both public and private grants, reducing the capital burden.
  • Separate entity status - The facility has its separate existence, and it can enter into a contract and carry the legal obligation.
  • Perpetual existence - Compared to profit organizations, non-profit nursing homes have a right to exist in perpetuity.

Leadership and Management Style

Indeed, leadership styles influence how employees are managed and clients are served. Thus, to maintain a healthy relationship, the following leadership styles are used to run the organization::

  1. Facilitative Leadership - Communication, culture, and relationship among all the people are emphasized. For instance, a consensus is gained before making any decision.
  2. Participative Leadership - Collaboration, teams, and peers are highly valued in the organization. This attracts donors by including them while making decisions; hence they feel valued.
  3. Transformational Leadership - In this particular style, the administrator pushes the boundaries of what is to be accomplished. Moreover, the leader is always aware of the available resources and knows how to work with what is available at the moment.

Challenges that  Employees face in the Course of their Duty

After talking to the employees in the organization, some of the challenges they face include a delayed stipend, short engagement and satisfaction, retention and retention of employees, and lack of volunteers. The president said it is difficult to find committed and ready to volunteer for a longer period (DeRosa, 2021). A volunteer must be passionate and able to help maintain engagement in the organization. Delayed stipends mostly do happen when the grants are delayed by both the government and private grants. Due to the unemployment rate, many people search for opportunities in non-profit organizations; hence, hiring employees becomes very competitive. Engaging the employees helps in retaining the volunteers and lowers turnover. Satisfaction of the workers is brought by engagement where the employees are trained on advanced technology and compensated for the good work.

Motivation

Notably, many of the employees chose this field because they have a passion for serving the community. For instance, Nurse K said that she has been volunteering for the last ten years and cannot regret it. Additionally, Doctor.S said that growing up in a poor background and watching some of his close relatives die because they had no money to access health care services motivated him to volunteer. 'I started volunteering because I was unemployed and wanted to build up my CV but, in the process, I became passionate about my work, and up to date, I have never applied for any other job", also said volunteer H.

Career Path

The president started as a volunteer but in a different organization, did his best, and was promoted from one level until he gained the president title. Similarly, the executive director used to volunteer during his free time in college and part-time while working. After working for the government for almost seven years, he resigned and started volunteering full time. He portrayed some leadership skills such as integrity and communication that led him to be the executive director.  Notably, some of the staff work in other organizations and volunteer during their free time while others volunteer fully.

Management Approach of the Organization

The employees are grateful to the organization because it uses the administrative approach to management. Essentially, this approach has several functions, including planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating, and controlling (DeRosa, 2021). Through this approach, every member is involved in carrying out one of the functions. It also brings about consensus while making decisions

Leadership and Managerial Skills Acquisition

Leadership and managerial skills were acquired by developing situational awareness to predict a problem before it occurs. They were also acquired by seeing the bigger picture, inspiring others, learning new things, empowering others, especially teammates, resolving conflict and being fair, learning to follow, and being responsible.

Response to Covid-19

Chief Executive Officer F said that he positively responded to Covid 19, although it was challenging at first. He learned how to attend to a person suffering from the virus. Moreover, he also had a chance to give back to the community by creating awareness on the mode of transmission, incubation period, signs and symptoms, prevention, and treatment

Conclusion

In conclusion, a non-profit nursing home is very important in helping the vulnerable people in the community, and it can be owned by an individual or a group of people. The organization faces different challenges, such as lack of funding, but it still has the strength to reach the community. Notably, the organization uses different career paths in hiring employees. Also, different leadership skills are used in organizations. Indeed, a great leader must portray some skills such as integrity, communication, and transparency. Markedly, some leadership skills are attained naturally, while others are through learning, discipline, and following. Regardless of the covid-19 negative effects on the organization's operations, it was still able to stand firm and cope with the situation.
