CASE STUDY

Clients: Mr. Preston Holscloth (75 years old) Mrs. Leigh Ann Holscloth (60 years old) Terrence Holscloth (32 years old) Amy Holscloth (16 years old) Mary Ann Holscloth (8 years old) Address: 103 Highway 67 Prospect, Alabama, 30420 Rural

Incident: On January 30, 2018, Mr. Terrance Holscloth returned home. He got into an altercation with his father and stormed out of the house. Sometime during late evening while they were sitting in the backyard by the pool he snuck into the home grabbed his mother’s keys, his daughter and some of his parent’s medication and fled in her vehicle.

Referral: Case referred to Family Services a therapeutic agency located in a neighboring city 65 miles south of Prospect, Alabama. The Agency received the referral from Family Court when Mr. Terrence Holscloth was cited for driving a stolen car under the influence of opiates with his daughter unbuckled in the backseat. Mr. Holscloth was taken to jail immediately. His daughter was released into the custody of her grandmother after attempts to reach her mother were unsuccessful. On March 5, 2018, Mr. Holscloth was fined and remanded to attend a thirty-day treatment program. Failure to attend would mean time spent in a correctional facility. Given the choice Mr. Holscloth elected to enter into treatment. His daughter will remain with her grandmother until her mother has been located. Based on the level of efforts to locate the child’s mother the Presiding Judge has ordered a thorough home study on the family system for future options for the child and Mr. Holscloth upon his discharge from the treatment facility.

Background Information: (Terrence Holscloth – Bi-Racial) Mr. Terrence Holscloth is the only child of Mr. Preston and Leigh Ann Holscloth. He had an older half-brother from a previous marriage of his father. This sibling committed suicide 10 years ago upon discharge from the armed forces. Mr. Holscloth earned a high school diploma though while in school he was an average student with many distractions (i.e., smoking, drugs, alcohol and promiscuity). His attendance was sporadic and his grades barely passable. He became a teenage father at the age of 16 from which Amy Holscloth was a product. Currently he does not have a relationship with this child. Mr. Holscloth never took on the responsibilities of a father and as such dropped out of Amy’s life shortly after she was born. To this date he has not paid any child support for either of his children. Unfortunately, there is no record of either child’s mother having ever sought child support. Importantly, Amy’s mother has been able to provide for this child with the support of her family. In regards to Mary Ann, he has been in an out of her life since she was born. He appears to care for her mother though their relationship has been entangled with domestic violence, substance abuse, homelessness, child endangerment, affairs, abandonment and constant financial strains. Seemingly, when they were having the most conflict their daughter would spend time with Mr. Holscloth’s parents. At least there she received shelter, food, clothing, medical attention, nurturing and the ability to go to school regularly. Reportedly, Mr. Holscloth has difficulty keeping employment, managing finances or maintaining stable housing. He has been described as an individual who spends for today and forget planning for tomorrow. As a result of his poor money management he has been in and out of his parent’s home since he graduated high school. At the time of his arrest he had been living with his mother along with his daughter. His concept of supporting the household consists of sitting up throughout the night watching television and sleeping throughout the day. Mr. Holscloth is afforded ample opportunity to spend time with his daughter while in his parent’s home yet he has little interaction with his child. All of his basic needs are being provided by his parents. This will be his first residential treatment. Reportedly, Mr. Holscloth had been stealing his parent’s medications. It has not been confirmed if he has been selling them, using them or both. His father was the individual who reported his wife’s car stolen. Based on his father this was not the first time. A month ago he took the car and retained it for two weeks. When he returned the vehicle it had over 1500 miles accrued. Mr. Holscloth is described by his father as untrustworthy; while his mother gives him the world without punishment or consequences for his actions. In fact, she gives him money and purchases his cigarettes. Seemingly, both parents enable his behavior. Mr. Holscloth contends that on the day he decided to take the car without permission he grabbed his daughter in an attempt to locate her mother for reconciliation. NOTE: Both mothers of his daughters are Hispanic (Puerto Rican)

Background Information: (Mr. Preston Holscloth – Caucasian) Mr. Holscloth is a 75-year-old retired veteran and owner of his own business. Since retirement he has undergone several surgeries to address cancer and his throat’s vocal cords. Today he speaks at a whisper. Medically he has undergone several surgical procedures from which he had to travel great distances for the specialize surgeries. Reportedly, today his health has stabilized as the prognosis is positive. Mr. Holscloth is the primary provider in the household financially, mentally and physically (takes care of all shopping, cleaning, gardening etc.). He reports having had his savings exhausted – not from medical expenses but from his wife’s uncontrollable spending and money spent on their son and granddaughter. Mr. Holscloth is a man of tall stature and softly spoken. He shares that he loves his wife and is not considering leaving her regardless of her impulsive spending, fragile mental state or lack of willingness to confront their son about his many issues. Mr. Holscloth has stated that his wife has recently made claims that people were spying on her in their home. In addition, she swears that people are listening in on her conversations when she is on the phone, in her car, and outside on her back porch. She has open credit cards in her name and jointly; maxing them all out. Mrs. Holscloth has spent undisclosed amounts of money from their savings based on Mr. Holscloth statements. He estimates 75 percent of his savings have been spent by his wife’s uncontrollable purchases. Friends and family members are very concern for her mental state as they have attempted to address her behavior with him and with her. To no avail Mrs. Holscloth refuges to seek additional medical attention and Mr. Holscloth continues to enable her behavior.

Background Information: (Mrs. Leigh Ann Holscloth- Asian) Mrs. Holscloth is a 60-year-old female who has spent the majority of her marriage as a homemaker. She is a very small frame woman (approximately 5’2” 110 pounds). While she is talkative much of her conversation is scatter and incoherent. Based on observations of her interaction with her granddaughter they appear to have a good relationship. Mrs. Holscloth is a chain smoker, does not eat much and see things that are not there. She is on medication for various physical problems resulting from poor nutrition. She has seen one therapist who has assessed her mental status concluding that she was fine. Yet, her delusions continue to escalate. In an effort to calm her down and appease her delusions her husband brought in a home security specialist to install camera’s in the home and outside hoping this would help. It did little to eradicate the delusional state of Mrs. Holscloth. It became clear to Mr. Holscloth that his wife’s mental condition was continuing to deteriorate. Their son has disappeared again leaving his daughter behind with no hint of when he would return. Given the conditions of the home their granddaughter began to act placing more strain on the grandparents. Recognizing the emotional strain of all that was going on in the home Mr. Holscloth attempted to discuss the child being removed from their home. This made Mrs. Holscloth very angry leading her to tell her husband Social Work, SWK 621 20 she didn’t love him anymore and wanted a divorce. The couple had not shared a room in over two years since Mr. Holscloth became ill.
