Now you understand the forces that have shaped our food supply chains for the products that you are studying

Management

Now you understand the forces that have shaped our food supply chains for the products that you are studying. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed some weaknesses in our food supply chain, impacting some food products more than others, and some people more than others through their work or through their ability to acquire food. Longer term forces such as climate change will impact our supply chains in the near term and longer term.

Let’s bring together the examples of different foods that everyone has been studying to think about today’s food supply chain challenges related to production, processing, and distribution:

  • Describe current constraints in your food’s supply chain (e.g., drought, disease, labor, health impacts, natural resources, markets, trade policies, etc.).
  • What technological, policy, social, or other changes are possible to remove these constraints?

If you want to attach a graph or other image, please turn your diagram into a jpg, png, tiff, or other simple picture file and embed it into your post using the little "mountain" icon in the toolbar like this: (see, I just did it!). One way you can get that file is to take a screenshot of your image. If you made it in Word or some other software, you can usually "save as" another file type. That way, everyone doesn't have to download an attachment to see it, it just shows up in the post.

According to CNN, the current pandemic has badly impacted the food industry, including the sweet potatoes supply chain. Because of the pandemic, most of the restaurant were shut down, schools were closed, large scale activities were cancelled or postpone. In addition, the travel ban has also affected the export of sweet potatoes. These factors have negatively impacted the market of sweet potatoes, that farmers were losing their customers. Also, transportation industry in the food supply chain has been impacted because of the shutdown of trading businesses. The biggest constraint in this situation will be selling out the excess sweet potatoes (Ortega, 2020).

To help supporting the farmers, the US government executed the “Coronavirus Food Assistant Program”, that the government will buy the food products from the farmers, and the “Farmers to Families Food Box” program that the government will sign contracts with roughly 200 farmers of buying their food for non profit organization or food bank (Ortega, 2020). One action that I think will be useful for the situation will be the promotion through television or internet show. Related show program producers can invite a popular chef and have the chef invents or teaches sweet potatoes recipe for people to cook it at home. This will be able to attract customer to consume more sweet potatoes.
