Management

Professional Application Activities

The application activities in this course will help you apply the professional skills that you are learning. In the first half of the course, you will produce a series of professional documents you can use to manage your career. These documents include your résumé, certificate and degree plan, LinkedIn profile, “Me in 30 Seconds,” as well as a professional email communication. In the second half of the course, you will participate in a group project to practice the skills that you have learned in this program.

Job Posting

This week, you will find a posting for a job that you would like to apply for. You will use this posting throughout the first half of the course, so it should be something that you are interested in. It is best to use a posting from your local area so that the job market information is accurate and applies to you. You should also choose a job that you are currently qualified for rather than one that you will be qualified for after you complete your degree.

Things to Look for in Your Job Posting

You will create your résumé based on your job posting. Make sure that your posting includes the key elements listed below so that you can customize your documents to the job posting. To view an example, read the Sample Job Posting document (Links to an external site.)Preview the document.

  • The posting should include position requirements (minimum skills, education, etc. that the applicant should have).
  • You should be able to identify keywords and phrases that indicate what type of employee they are looking for (see “Your Job Posting” section of the W02 Writing Lesson for details).

What If I Don't Want a Job?

If you don’t want a job right now, pick a job posting anyway. Pick one that you are currently qualified for. This will help you complete the activities in the first few weeks of the course.

What If I Can't Work?

If you can’t work right now for some reason, pick a job posting that you could do if you were allowed to work.

What If I Want to Pick a Job Listing That is Not in English?

You can do this, but you must translate it for your instructor. Your instructor needs to be able to read it so s/he can grade your work this semester. You can use Google Translate or some other method to translate. The translation doesn’t have to be perfect, but it needs to include the elements listed in the rubric for this application activity.
