Application Assignment 1: Social Identity Wheel

Complete the social identity wheel on the next page to help you reflect on how your membership in certain social groups, whether by choice or because you were born into them, has influenced your sense of identity as well as your interactions and relationships with others. The social identity wheel features a circle that is separated into 11 sections. Each section is labeled: (starting at the top and moving clockwise around the circle) ethnicity; socio-economic status; gender; sex; sexual orientation; national origin; first language; physical, emotional, developmental (dis)ability; age; religious or spiritual affiliation; race. In the center of the circle, there are five numbered prompts: (1) Identities you think about most often; (2) Identities you think about least often; (3) Your own identities you would like to know more about; (4) Identities that have the strongest effect on how you perceive yourself; (5) Identities that have the greatest effect on how others perceive you. In your essay response after completing the social identity wheel, address the questions listed below. Be sure to apply concepts, ideas, and theory from the assigned readings. This assignment should be no less than 1,250 words. The grading rubric on the last page will be used to assess this assignment.

1.            Which identities do you think about or feel most/least often? When are you most/least aware of these identities?

2.            Which identities have the strongest impact on how you perceive or define yourself?

3.            Which identities have the strongest impact on how you think other people perceive or label you?

4.            How do these identities influence how you interact with others?

5.            Review your answers to questions 1–4. How might your age and/or circumstances influence, or even change, some of your answers?

6.            How has your socialization influenced your identity?

7.            Which identities, if any, have changed or are changing as you grow up?

8.            How well do you think the social identity wheel graphic represents your social identity? Would you add or change any categories? If so, which ones? If not, why not?

Application Assignment 2: Online Identities

Your online identity is made up of everything about you that exists online. Components of your online identity can include all of your profiles on social networking and media sites, comments you make, images and videos you share, comments and images of you that others publish on social media, etc. What does your current online identity say about you? Start by researching your online identity by performing a Google and Google Image search (sometimes it helps to use quotation marks around your name plus your location – i.e., “Patricia Claster” + “Erie, PA”). Be sure to log out of your social media accounts so that you can view what the public views when searching for you. Provide an analysis of your current online identity and reflect on how you think you are perceived online. Some other questions to consider:  How do you think social media has changed how we think about identity? How do you feel about your online identity? What aspects of yourself do you think are most important to convey? Does your online identity feel like an accurate representation? How much power and control do you have over your online identity? How can you change your online identity? How does your online identify impact you now and how might it impact you in the future? Does your current online identity align with your professional goals? How can you improve your online identity to better align with your future professional aspirations? Be sure to apply concepts, ideas, and theory from the assigned readings in your response. This assignment should be no less than 1,250 words. The grading rubric on the last page will be used to assess this assignment.
