Writing

We have discussed various statistical hypotheses tests. For this assignment you will be tasked with putting those skills to use and completing a formal write up. This assignment is worth a total of 50 points, which are distributed on a rubric system, identified in (parentheses) below.

You will choose from one of the following scenarios:

Scenario One: One Population Mean With a Large Sample (Chapter 7)

Scenario Two: Chi - Square (Chapter 8)

Scenario Three: Two Population Mean With a Dependent Sample (Chapter 9)

*For prompts, articles, and formatting templates, scroll to the bottom.

Directions: You will complete your formal write up in the following format.

Formatting (5 points)

Cover Page: Meaningful title; Students name; Couse name (SBS 320 Social Science Research Methods); Professors name (Dr. Posey); Semester term (e.g.) Spring 2021. Cover page should be in APA format, 7th edition.

Font: Times New Roman; Size 12.

Margins: 1 inch.

Spacing: Double spaced.

Additional Formatting Requirements: Page numbers beginning on the first page; Running header.

*You will need to specify on the cover page which scenario you are doing.

The formal write up should start on the second page and include the following sections.

Section I: Introduction ( 5 - 9 sentences) (5 points)

  • This section should start with a bolded subheading titled 'Introduction'.
  • Write a one paragraph introduction to your research project. Discuss why it is important to test this question? What are the potential benefits to the justice system and/or society by doing this research? Be specific.

Section II: Literature Review (5 - 9 sentences PER paragraph) (10 points)

  • This section should start with a bolded subheading titled 'Literature Review'.
  • Write three paragraphs summarizing the articles for your selected scenario (articles for each scenario can be found below). Each article should have its own paragraph summarizing that article. Things to include: the name of the article, the year it was published, what the research question was, describe their sample in terms of participants (number of participants, gender, race, age), geographical location of the research, and the findings of the research.

*Do not include articles in your literature review that are outside of the articles being provided to you.

Section III: Methodology (10 points)

  • This section should start with a bolded subheading titled 'Methodology'.
  • Each bullet point should be its own COMPLETE sentence
  • (a) Identify the independent variable.
  • (b) Identify the dependent variable.
  • (c) Write a null hypothesis.
  • (d) Write an alternative hypothesis.
  • (e) State whether this is a directional or non directional hypothesis (not applicable for Scenario Two).
  • (f) State whether this is a one tailed test or two tailed test (not applicable for Scenario Two).
  • (g) State the appropriate test statistic and the sampling distribution of that test statistic.
    • ***Be sure to use the formatting template for this section as it will contain SPECIFIC information about the write up for your scenario.

Section IV: Results (1 - 2 sentences) (5 points)

  • This section should start with a bolded subheading titled 'Results'.
  • In a COMPLETE sentence make a decision about your hypothesis: Reject the Null Hypothesis or Fail to Reject the Null Hypothesis.

Section V: Conclusion (10 points)

  • This section should start with a bolded subheading titled 'Conclusion'.
  • Each bullet point should be its own COMPLETE sentence
  • (a) Is this finding statistically significant?
  • (b) Write a formal conclusion/what does this mean?
  • (c) Is it probable that this is occurring by random chance?
    • *Hint: If you Reject the Null Hypothesis, it is probable that your observations are not occurring by random chance, if you Fail to Reject the Null Hypothesis, the opposite is true.
  • (d) What is the chance of error (Type I or Type II, and what percentage)?
  • *If and only if you select Scenario Two, you will need to answer the following bullet points in a COMPLETE sentence.
  • (e) What is the association type (Positive or Negative)?
  • (f) What is the measurement of association conclusion?
  • (g) What is the strength of the relationship (weak, modest, strong)?
    • ***Be sure to use the formatting template for this section as it will contain SPECIFIC information about the write up for your scenario.

Citations and References Page: (5 points) The assignment should end with a References Page/Work Cited Page. "References Page" or "Work Cited" should include a bolded subheading centered at the top. All articles included in your 'Literature Review' section should be listed on the page with FULL citations, alphabetically, and in APA format, compliant with the 7th edition. These sources need to be cited internally (within the Literature Review section of your paper) and externally (on a references page). Further, this page should be its own page. In other words, it should not start at the bottom of another page.

Paper Length: The completed paper should be 3-4 pages in length (not including the Cover Page and References Page).

To receive full credit your assignment should be written in full sentences, following the format listed above, and free of spelling and grammatical errors.

You must keep a copy of all written work. You must be able to immediately produce a copy of the work any time there is a question concerning the assignment or grade.
