History 110 B: The Twentieth Century World Spring Semester 2021 Second Paper Assignment Description: For your second major writing assignment, you must construct a well-developed research paper in which you analyze a particular event or aspect of twentieth century world history. You have great latitude in choosing the subject you wish to research, but it must fit within one of the broad topics of this course (e.g. The Great War and Conflict on a World Scale, The Holocaust, The Cold War Begins, etc.). Within this framework, however, you can choose from a wide range of events or concepts that might interest you. Some of you might want to focus on a specific event, such as popular response to the allied victory in World War Two, resistance strategies during the Holocaust, or the American experience in Vietnam. You can also explore broader themes such as Cold War anxieties or environmental concerns in the postwar period. Whatever project you ultimately choose to pursue, in order to make an effective argument, you must provide specific evidence by utilizing primary and secondary source evidence from the campus library. You can make use of newspaper articles, letters to the editor, diaries/memoirs, official government reports, journal articles, and a variety of other sources that would help solidify your major points. As you write your paper, consider how the authors of your sources perceive events of the day, both personally and as public citizens. How, for example, do social class and/or gender shape their outlook of events? In your conclusion, you may also wish to address broadly how these sources shed light on our understanding of the twentieth century. Above all, I will be grading your papers based on how well you utilize your primary and secondary sources to substantiate your case. Be as specific as you can by providing concrete examples to support your argument. Paper Format: Papers must be 5 pages long, typed in 12-point font, Times New Roman format, double-spaced, with one inch margins. Please do not pad the length of the paper by using wide margins, large font, or triple spacing between paragraphs. Remember that the exact length of your paper is not as vital as how thoroughly and thoughtfully you discuss the topic. The pages must also be numbered and stapled together. Please proofread the paper before turning it in to catch spelling and grammatical errors! Spelling and grammar count toward your grade. Misspellings and incorrect grammatical constructions (incomplete sentences, mismatch of subject and verb, misuse of pronouns, and confusion between past and present tense) do not present your ideas effectively. When you have finished writing your paper, edit it carefully. Correct the spelling. Read each sentence slowly aloud to make sure that it is complete and that it expresses exactly what you mean. Title: Always include a title. Your title should not only reflect the general theme with which you are working, but the analytical focus of the paper as well. This will provide the reader with an idea of what your argument will entail before a single word is read. 1 For example, your paper should not be titled simply “Second Paper Assignment.” Take some time to be creative! Thesis: You must have a clearly stated thesis. It should state your main argument and contain a “blueprint” that briefly lists the evidence you will use to support your argument. Your thesis may be more than one sentence long, depending on the intricacy of your argument. Please italicize or underline your thesis statement. Documentation: You must have a bibliography that lists your primary and secondary sources in a coherent format. Your paper must also adhere to proper citation rules based on either the Chicago or Turabian manuals of style. You may use either footnotes or endnotes, but make sure that you utilize proper format and cite your sources accurately. Please provide proper documentation for your evidence, even if it is not a direct quote. If you summarize material from a source, be certain that you cite that information as well. Direct quotes that are more than six lines are long quotes, and they must be single-spaced and indented ten spaces. I will deduct points if you do not use citations in your paper. Here is an example of proper citation in a footnote: Sheila Fitzpatrick, Everyday Stalinism: Ordinary Life in Extraordinary Times: Soviet Russia in the 1930s (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2000), 65, 102-104. And for the bibliography: Fitzpatrick, Sheila. Everyday Stalinism: Ordinary Life in Extraordinary Times: Soviet Russia in the 1930s. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2000. Avoid the temptation to write the essay the night before the paper is due. First drafts rarely show one’s best work. Give yourself time to think about it, and then rewrite it.
