The purpose of this essay is to educate others on what Servant Leadership is, the characteristics, and pros/cons. Leadership is the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the task and as such improving the organization. “A Leader is a person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country”. There are different types of leadership. There can be leaders with all types of personalities, schooling, etc. Leaders use efforts, resources and sound to reach the goal of the organization. The Servant Leader is a servant first (Greenleaf). The goal of the Servant leader is to serve those below them. Servant leadership is a philosophy in which the main goal of the leader is to serve. Spears defined servant leadership in terms of four elements namely power sharing in decision making, a holistic approach to work, service to others and cultivation of a sense of community (Spears 4). This type of leadership is both logical and intuitive. It shares the power in decision making. It makes sure that other people’s highest needs are being met. This type of leadership can’t be a “quick-fix”. Nor can it be something quickly implanted in an organization. Servant leadership is a long-term change in life and work. It’s a way of being. It creates a positive change in our society. In the Military, Servant Leaders set aside their egos and seek to place the needs of others first to accomplish the mission and improve the organization. Servant leaders have many characteristics. One of them is listening, which is essential to the growth of a Servant Leader. This characteristic helps to identify the will of the group and then clarify it. It’s important to listen intently. It’s more important to Servant leaders to listen than talk to others. Another attribute Servant Leaders have is empathy. They strive to understand and connect with others. Servant Leaders are able The ability to influence others is important to the change of the organization. Their able to convince followers to accept change. This type of leadership only works when you truly have the desire to help others. Servant leaders are fully aware of their strengths, weaknesses, biases, feelings and values. This helps them serve others productively. Servant leaders provide a productive work environment. They think the bigger picture and motivate others to accomplish their vision. They magnify teamwork and performance. Servant Leaders have a great influence on their followers. Servant Leadership has pros and cons. A pro of Servant Leadership, it can improve an organization/society overtime. This leadership style encourages and motivates high performance from organization. It boosts morale. Groups, teams, organizations, etc. feel valued and looked out for. It inspires the followers to work with enthusiasm which leads to them serving others. Servant Leaders set strong examples of ethical behavior. They make decision making easier because value the opinion of everybody on the team. A con of Servant Leadership, is that it requires time to see positive results. Another con can be focusing too much on each individual that the overall goal/mission is missed. Servant Leaders are hard to find, because Servant Leadership involves a sense of selflessness and most leaders like the power/control. Leaders may be perceived as weak. Decision making can take longer in the organization instead of faster, like expected. Servant Leadership can be positive or negative. In conclusion, Servant Leadership is about serving others and having their best interest, theirs many characteristics, and pros/cons. Servant Leadership is a practice. The more its practiced, the more natural it becomes. Sometimes it can feel unrewarding but it can bring great results. Servant leaders put service first and effectively listen. They are persuasive, influential, and committed to helping people. Soldiers know when their leaders genuinely care and that builds trust. This helps them accomplish the mission as a team. Servant Leadership is about doing the right thing. Its all about the people. Servant Leaders and Followers help each other reach the goal.
