Sloan World Music 2 May 2021 Melody The Beiguan music is from the Chinese culture has differences and similarities with the Carnatic music from the Indian musical culture. These comparative aspects are more on the musical element of melody. The melody for Carnatic music is made of three common instruments; the violin, bamboo flute, and the mandolin. Since the melody is the most vocal, the mridangam drums make the melody strong as they form the percussion layer. An example of a song of the Carnatic musical culture is the Kriti of South India (Lawson et al., 2020). The Beiguan music is of Chinese culture, with the large gong producing the melody. The two syllables used for the melody are the “kuang” and the “tak,” which are evident in all Beiguan songs. The melody for the Chinese Beigun music is high, while that of Indian Carnatic music is low. Both songs use syllables in identifying the melody. Harmony The harmony that the two songs are comparable in that the Indian Carnatic music is of two elements; the Raga and the Tala. The Raga Carnatic songs have a mel-harmony since the leading voice has derivation from the melodic structure of the song and combinational structure, whereas the Beiguan music is melodic. The Beiguan songs use the flute in achieving harmony. Indian Raga does not use the flute but rather the words and voice of the lead in achieving harmony. The difference between these two forms of music is in the instrument of achieving harmony (Maheendran, 2017). Similarities that the Beiguan and Carnatic songs have in their harmonies are the integrative level of the harmonious sounds. The harmonies have an exact level of distance from the melody in the songs.
