CREATING A LONG REPORT

  • *GETTING STARTED
  • Open the file SC_WD19_9b_FirstLastName_1.docx, available for download from the SAM website.
  • Save the file as SC_WD19_9b_FirstLastName_2.docx by changing the “1” to a “2”.
    • If you do not see the .docx file extension in the Save As dialog box, do not type it. The program will add the file extension for you automatically.
  • To complete this SAM Project, you will also need to download and save the following data files from the SAM website onto your computer:
    • Support_WD19_9b_Report.docx
  • With the file SC_WD19_9b_FirstLastName_2.docx still open, ensure that your first and last name is displayed in the footer.
    • If the footer does not display your name, delete the file and download a new copy from the SAM website.
  • PROJECT STEPS
  1. You are a student at Pelletiere College in Montpelier, Vermont, and are working on a report for your Human Behavior class with your classmate, Arvid Singh. Arvid has already created his part of the report. You need to incorporate his content and complete the report.
Switch to Outline View, and then insert a subdocument to include the text Arvid has already written as follows:
    1. With the insertion point on the section break above the Table of Figures heading, show the entire document.
    2. Insert the document Support_WD19_9b_Report.docx to incorporate Arvid's content.
    3. Select the subdocument and then unlink it so that the subdocument becomes a permanent part of the master document.
    4. Close Outline View.
  2. On page 2, find the phrase "…determined that expressions of happiness, fear, anger, disgust, sadness, and surprise are universal." and then insert the following endnote after the period:
In other words, every culture has similar expressions for these emotions.
  3. On page 3, in the italic words "le zero", replace the "e" in "zero" with a small letter E with an acute accent (symbol 233).
  4. On page 4, add a caption to the picture of the people in an elevator so that the caption is displayed as follows:
Figure 3: People avoid eye contact in impersonal situations.
  5. In the paragraph before the elevator picture on page 4, select the placeholder text "[insert figure cross-reference]" and replace it with a cross-reference to Figure 3 that displays only the figure label and number.
  6. On page 4, in the sentence before the elevator picture that begins "Failing to observe these categories of proxemics in social interactions is perceived as a violation of personal space…", mark "personal space" as an index entry.
  7. Create a link between the "Workplace Communication" text box on page 4 and the blank text box on page 5 so that the text can continue from page to page as necessary.
  8. On page 5, insert a Page break before the "Interaction of Verbal and Nonverbal Communication" heading so that the heading appears on a new page.
  9. On page 2, insert a hyperlink from the text "interaction" in the third body paragraph (beginning "This report defines…" and ending "nonverbal and verbal communication.") to the heading "Interaction of Verbal and Nonverbal Communication".
  10. Insert breaks to prepare for adding a table of contents to the document as follows:
    1. Position the insertion point to the left of the "Introduction" heading on page 2 and then insert a Page break to add a new blank page for the table of contents.
    2. With the insertion point still positioned to the left of the "Introduction" heading, insert a Continuous section break to keep the table of contents in a separate section.
  11. Position the insertion point before the page break on the new page you just added and then insert a table of contents using the Automatic Table 2 style in the Table of Contents gallery. [Mac Hint: Classic style.]
  12. On page 3 (the page beginning with the "Introduction" heading), insert a header as follows:
    1. Insert the Ion (Dark) header.
    2. Break the link to the previous section.
    3. Go to the previous section and then remove the header.
    4. Close the Header & Footer tools.
  13. At the bottom of page 8, delete the Next Page section break to remove an extra section from the document.
  14. On page 9, insert a new blank paragraph after the "Table of Figures" heading, and then insert a table of figures using the default format to list the figures in the document.
  15. On page 10, insert a new blank paragraph after the "Index" heading, and then insert an index using the default format.
  16. Add an entry to the index as follows to include a missing subtopic:
    1. On page 7, at the end of the last paragraph on the page, mark an index entry that uses paralanguage as the main entry and expressions as the subentry.
    2. Hide the index codes and other formatting marks, and then update the index and the other field codes in the document to include the new entry and the correct page numbers. (Hint: If you are having trouble hiding the index codes, click the File tab and then click Options. In the left pane of the Word Options dialog box, click Display. If the Hidden text check box in the "Always show these formatting marks on the screen" section contains a checkmark, click the box to remove the checkmark, and then click OK.)
  17. Change the document margins to apply a 0.25" gutter to the Whole document to prepare for binding the document.

Your document should look like the Final Figure on the following pages. Save your changes, close the document, and then exit Word. Follow the directions on the SAM website to submit your completed project.
