CREATING A NEWSLETTER WITH SMARTART

  • *GETTING STARTED
  • Open the file SC_WD19_EOM7-2_FirstLastName_1.docx, available for download from the SAM website.
  • Save the file as SC_WD19_EOM7-2_FirstLastName_2.docx by changing the “1” to a “2”.
    • If you do not see the .docx file extension in the Save As dialog box, do not type it. The program will add the file extension for you automatically.
  • To complete this SAM Project, you will also need to download and save the following data files from the SAM website onto your computer:
    • Support_WD19_EOM7-2_Map.png
    • Support_WD19_EOM7-2_Tip.docx
  • With the file SC_WD19_EOM7-2_FirstLastName_2.docx still open, ensure that your first and last name is displayed in the footer.
    • If the footer does not display your name, delete the file and download a new copy from the SAM website.
  • PROJECT STEPS
  1. As the executive assistant to the chief recruiter at SwiftRecruiters, you are helping to produce the monthly newsletter, which is emailed to clients. You are preparing the current issue newsletter and need to enhance the graphical elements in the newsletter.

Remove the Glow effect from the WordArt text "SwiftRecruiters Insights" to improve the appearance of the nameplate. Change the Shadow effect to Offset: Bottom to apply a more uniform shadow.
  2. Insert a Continuous section break at the beginning of the first body paragraph ("If you are willing…top five cities for jobs.") to prepare for setting the article text into columns.
  3. Format the content after the section break in two columns to use a common newsletter format. Change the spacing between columns to 0.2" to add more white space. Automatically hyphenate the document to make the right margin less ragged.
  4. Format the first letter in the article text (the "I" in "If you are…") as a drop cap using the Dropped style to add a professional typeface element to the newsletter. Change the font color of the drop cap to Orange, Accent 4, Darker 25% to coordinate with other colors on the page.
  5. In the SmartArt on page 1, insert the picture from the file Support_WD19_EOM7-2_Map.png in the round shape on the left side of the "5. Colorado Springs, CO" shape.
  6. Change the fill color of all the SmartArt shapes to Orange, Accent 4, Darker 25% to better match the rest of the document.
  7. Move the insertion point to the blank paragraph before the paragraph beginning "Project enthusiasm...". Insert a Simple text box to prepare for adding a tip to the newsletter. Copy and paste the paragraph from the file Support_WD19_EOM7-2_Tip.docx using the destination styles. Delete the extra paragraph mark inside the text box.
  8. Resize the text box to a width of 3". Change the fill color and the outline of the text box to Orange, Accent 4, Darker 25%. Change the font color of the text in the text box to White, Background 1.
  9. On page 2, resize the "HARD SKILLS" SmartArt to a width of 3" so that it fits completely in the first column. Add a shape to the "HARD SKILLS" SmartArt. Type UX design in the new shape to add the hard skill of user interface design.
  10. Change the layout of the "SOFT SKILLS" SmartArt to Hexagon Radial to use the same layout as the "HARD SKILLS" SmartArt. Change the text wrapping to Square to flow the text around the SmartArt.

Your document should look like the Final Figure on the following pages. Save your changes, close the document, and then exit Word. Follow the directions on the SAM website to submit your completed project.
