As we have learned, traumatic events have taken place across history. Although PTSD is a common term today, it is primarily seen as a combat-related injury. In fact, post-traumatic stress is simply the human response to any form of trauma and has been known by various names throughout history.
The purpose of this assignment is to create a visual presentation of traumatic events throughout history. Choose a minimum of 8 events that you feel expanded your own understanding of what trauma looks like. At least 1 must be an event that impacted a community or a group of people. The events you choose should not be restricted to a common theme such as combat. Instead, include a variety of events that have impacted groups of people or communities. Present your chosen events in chronological order with a brief description for each. This is NOT a timeline of how PTSD became a mental health diagnosis.
This assignment is worth 15% of your total grade.
Assignment Instructions
For this assignment, you have been provided with a resource page that includes a number of articles and documents related to the history of trauma. Please review these and feel free to seek out other resources to assist you. The instructions for this assignment are listed below.
- Open the Timeline Resource page (at the bottom of this assignment) and explore the various events.
- Make a list of a variety of events that you find of interest and review these more thoroughly (you can narrow this down later on).
- As you research these events note the specific dates when the events occurred and list them chronologically - earliest to latest. Remember, it is important to note the source for each event as this will become your REFERENCE page which will be submitted with your timeline.
- From this list, choose 8 events that you feel expanded your own understanding of what trauma looks like. Be creative and find graphics to enhance your timeline. At least one of these must be a community, historical or intergenerational traumatic.
- To complete your timeline, you will use the graphic design program. For this assignment, you can use the graphic design program Canva or you can use software of your own choosing (must be pre-approved by the instructor before beginning). If you choose Canva please click on the link above to access the timeline options. It will be your responsibility to customize your timeline with appropriate pictures, colors, and text to best exemplify your timeline.
Once you have completed your timeline, please download it as an image (preferably a PNG) by clicking on the download button at the top right corner and choosing PNG (if using Canva) or upload your timeline from another program. Save it under Trauma_Timeline_LastName. Please upload it below by clicking on the upload option.
