This chapter we are learning about the definition of "thinking" and various types of "intelligence". Most often we believe thinking is simply thoughts moving together in combination to form images or ideas. As you read the chapter you will find that "Thinking" is much more complex and has profound effects on personality and behavior. One's cognitive processes and perceptions effect ones beliefs, therefore ones actions. We first discussed the concept of critical thinking in the first page of Chapter 2 module. (Go back, read and watch video in this section if you have forgotten). This is the skill in which people develop the ability to be objective and evaluate events with logic rather than pure emotional reactions. In chapter 7 different types of thinking such as divergent thinking and convergent thinking are explored. Pay close attention to the differences and how this relates to intelligence and creativity.
The following video explores various types of Intelligence. You will see the 1997 interview of Harvard University Professor Howard Gardner, famous for developing theory of "Multiple Intelligences". He believes "intelligence goes far beyond traditional verbal and linguistic and logical and mathematical measurements".(edutpoia.org) Before watching the video read section 7.4 of the textbook to familiarize yourself with the 8 type of intelligence that Gardner references in this video (below point 2 on the web page) as he discusses intelligence in relation to student learning.

Choose only ONE question per topic, and write a coherent, well-organized essay, using concepts from the text of no less that 400-450 words (Three full Paragraphs) that responds to the question in its entirety. Following direction from section 5 (grading system) of syllabus--write clearly, include what you have learned in this unit without copying, cite your source, and apply the concept learned to the topic chosen. Read directions carefully and cover all aspects in a logical, well-organized essay.

Chapter 7: Thinking, Intelligence, and Creativity
After reading in textbook about creativity and Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, watch the video of artist David Garibaldi located on the opening page of this module. In your AP essay define intelligence as indicated in the textbook and explain what type of intelligence you believe David Garibaldi exhibits. Give examples from the video and defend your ideas based on information from the textbook and/or video.
Intelligence is a collection of skills and abilities. Psychologists that when it comes to the term intelligence, there are multiple forms, as all individuals gather and retain information differently. There are many different theories of intelligence, but one of the most popular (despite criticism of the lack of concrete evidence) is Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory. Gardner explains in Howard Gardner on Multiple Intelligences (2010) that "everything can be taught in more than one way, and anything that is understood can be shown in more than one way" (3:08-3:15). Gardner also believes that because of the wide range of topics studies in school, the intelligence most receive is relatively superficial rather than focused. Rather than every individual learning, in the same manner, they are all different. Making the basic teaching methods -through reading and listening to lectures- is not necessarily the best way to learn. More hands-on approaches are better forms of learning because they allow the majority to retain and understand their information.
There are eight different forms of intelligence in Gardener's theory that an individual may or may not possess. These eight types of intelligence are linguistic intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, musical intelligence, spatial intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, logical-mathematical intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, and naturalistic intelligence (Spielman, Jenkins, & Lovett, 2020). These different bits of intelligence often form together to create different intelligence types. These include interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence create emotional intelligence. The main reason Gardner's theory is so popular is that there is a belief that there, in fact, different types of intelligence an individual can have, which contributes to their differing personalities, as well as their strengths and weaknesses.
Based on the video of David Garibaldi, it seems that the best expresses the forms of spatial and bodily-kinesthetic intelligence. Through spatial intelligence, Garibaldi visualizes his art as he paints and what the final result will be (once he flips it over). In this form of intelligence, he expresses creativity, which is specific knowledge about something, and according to Spielman, Jenkins, & Lovett in Psychology 2e (2020), "is the ability to generate, create, or discover new ideas, solutions, and possibilities (7.4, para 15). In a way, he is creating and putting together a puzzle because of the type of painting he completes. Through bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, he coordinates his actions through his mind, which gives him the exceptional amount of control necessary for painting such an extraordinary piece of art.
