How to Create a Mind Map 1

Writing

How to Create a Mind Map 1. The Brainstorm • Fill in the blanks on the brainstorm sheet – don’t take too much time; it’s a way to gather ideas quickly. You will add more as you work on your Mind Map. • The headings are suggestions. You can create the headings you want to use instead or alongside these. Favorite bands, favorite movies, people I most admire, etc. 2. The Mind Map • Take a blank piece of plain paper, and turn the page so it’s sideways (landscape). • Start by sketching and then drawing a colorful image in the center of the paper. This central image represents… YOU! It’s a visual symbol that captures a sense of who you are. • Print each heading (Friends, My Family, etc.) from your brainstorm at the end of a line that extends out from your center image (the lines can be straight, wavy, jagged like tree branches, etc.), so that the lines surrounding your center image are moving in all directions. • At each heading, put the other words and names from your brainstorm, adding others. The words can drop down underneath your heading, or surround it, have their own smaller branches, etc. • Add smaller images, symbols, icons, colorful shapes and patterns, as you wish, around or near each cluster of words. Images can visualize important key words on your map. • Be as colorful and creative and imaginative as possible. Allow your Mind Map to be as playful or as formal and as you want. • Have some serious fun!
