Pretend you are an employer looking for potential candidates to interview for a job in your company

Writing

Pretend you are an employer looking for potential candidates to interview for a job in your company. Look through the sample resumes I have posted and respond to the following questions in a discussion board post:

Would you hire these individuals or call them in for an interview based on what you see?  Why or why not?  Try to discuss specifics about what things work and don't work on these documents.  Be as detailed and nit-picky as possible.

To access the sample cover letters and resumes, please click on the first three threads I have posted for you in order to review the three different samples of resumes and cover letters.  They are in PDF format so that the formatting wouldn't be lost.  If they won't open for you, you might need to do a quick download of Adobe Reader, or save them to your computer and open in Google Docs.

You may choose one resume and one cover letter to address in your post, or discuss them all.  However, try to be clear about which one you are discussing as you give your comments (call them Sample 1, 2, or 3).  Remember that you are pretending to be an employer looking these over as potential application materials for a job in your company.

These are all separate documents from random people, but you want to think about what you know about both the cover letter and the resume and how each should look.

You will need to discuss at least ONE resume and ONE cover letter.

Sample one - Mitchell Edward Kadlec

I’m highly impressed by this individual. Here are some of the reasons why;

  • First of all, she is very confident in herself. One of the greatest skills anyone can possess is having self-belief in their ability and not being afraid to show it. It is very evident in how she tells us about herself and what she has been doing for almost 24 years.
  • She also has experience. She has been working since 1997. This is almost 24 years and above and that means they are experienced and they are mature. At times, whenever we are hiring people, we try and look for people who have stayed in the field for some years. It is because they are matured and so we will have little cases or misconduct from them.
  • She is also learned. She is currently pursuing her ASE Certification St. Cloud, and has MN GED Buffalo Community Ed, Buffalo, MN in her pocket already.
  • She has also equipped herself with crucial skills to help her survive in a working environment. I say this because she has Mentored Service Manager and other lead automotive technicians DEVELOPMENT to increase my knowledge of automotive service. Currently studying and registered to obtain Automotive Service Excellence Certification. This makes her an asset to my company.
  • She is also equipped with technical skills. They include Genesis Diagnostic, NAPA Tracks, SKILLS Internet, Blue Bullet, Transmission and power steering flushers, Tire Machine, Tire Balancer, Hoist, Air Tools, Bobcat and Forklift.
  • Moreover, she is a good person. It is seen when she states she Volunteers for homeless shelters Participate in Car Shows.
  • Based on how she has arranged her work, it would be true to say that she is organized and shows great communication skills.

In other words, Mitchell is a full package and I wouldn’t mind having such an employee working for me.

Sample two - Becky Reeder

After analysing the resume, I would hire Becky. Here’s why;

  • She has great communication skills. It is very evident from the way she is relaying the message about what she has been up to and what she can do. If I’m looking for a good lawyer, then she would fit because of her communication skills.
  • She is also a hard worker. It is very evident because she works at a massage lounge despite of the fact that she is still studying law. As we all know, handling law is not easy and to have someone who can juggle both working and studying, then that shows a great dedication and hard work.
  • She is very open-minded. In her resume, she clearly states that she has no experience in the law world but she is willing to learn. Not many people can openly say that they are not qualified and that sends a very great message to me. She is open-minded and will not mind sharing anything.
  • She is educated. She has; Romeoville, IL (815) 306-2600 Certification and Training Associates in Applied Science in Paralegal 4/4/2011-present Student member of Illinois Paralegal Association SOHMAR: School of Holistic Massage and Reflexology Downers Grove, IL (630) 968-7827 Certification and Training: Earned certificate for completing 550 hour massage therapy course 3/07-3/08 Earned certificate for completing 125 hour reflexology course 1/08-4/08 Passed Illinois state licensing exam on 5/15/2008 Lisle Senior High School Lisle, IL Certification and Training Earned high school diploma 6/2003
  • She also has good grammar. From the way she has written her letter, it would be unfair not to recognize that she has good grammar and can communicate effective even in writing.

We all start from somewhere and I would love to give Becky a chance to grow in my firm and develop her character more. I would love to have her as an intern without any fear.

Sample three - Mane L. Thao

I would not hire Mane. Here’s why;

  • His resume just isn’t enough. He hasn’t really done justice to himself because he hasn’t given any information that is worth it. He has not introduced himself nor has he even take time and tell me a little about himself.
  • He has not planned his resume well and that speaks a lot about himself. If he cannot prepare a good resume, how will he be able to provide quality services in the company?
  • He seems to very arrogant. I say this because when it comes to a resume, you don’t hold back anything. Unfortunately, Mane does not know this and states that the reference shall be given in case need be.

In simple words, I have not liked how Mane has written his resume and I would certainly not hire him.

Resume/Cover Letter Samples

Top of Form

For sample 1 (Mane L. Thao) I would not call them in for an interview or hire them. Their resume is very vague and not well explained or detailed. They don’t even try to explain what their activities and volunteering consists of and what they do. Their format is good though and they act least put an objective and summary. Sample 2 (Becky Reeder) I would call heroine for an interview. She has a clean layout of a resume and she took the time to write an email. She clearly states she has no experience, but she is willing to learn. I would call her in an interview to know more about her. She always has associates in Applied Science in Paralegal and is a student member of the Illinois Paralegal Association. Sample 3 (Mitchell Edward Kadlec) has an excellent format for a resume. They clearly explain in detail what each experience or activity consists of. Even with this great resume, I would not call them in for the job or an interview. Their resume lacks grammar as there are many mistakes. It is just not professional. If they were to reread and change their mistakes, then maybe they would get an interview call.

ANSWER

I totally agree with this recommendation. It’s because Becky and Mitchell have both given great resumes about themselves in a way you need not ask anything about them as they have given full details. However, Mane does not deliver anything and the information about himself is so vague to an extent someone does not have the driver to even consider him for any appointment.

RE: Resume/Cover Letter Samples

I agree with you on all three of them. Do they deserve an interview? If you are looking for the best candidate, I would probably not call any of them.

For sample 1- I would agree all the way. There was no persona in it. They could have followed the skill set resume template and think they would have had better success in explaining all their background, along with the second sample you mentioned.

The second sample, and the one you are most likely to hire, has an overall great resume, but it is the cover letter for me. It does not explain why she switched to the paralegal staff; we can only assume that it is because she is studying in that field.

In the third example, I think he is more than qualified to do the job, but if he performs the way he formats the resume, I am not confident he won't make minor mistakes. There are too many grammatical errors as well as presentation errors that break this resume. He seems like a great candidate. However, his resume is not up to par.

ANSWER

I will not agree with this comment. This is because Becky and Mitchell have given great resumes and they have effectively delivered what they have to offer. They might not have followed the correct English routine but whatever they have written is enough for any employer to understand them and to know they are enough. I totally disagree with his assessment on the third sample because he is totally wrong and any employer should be able to notice that.
