For a long time, companies have relied on innovation to stimulate growth and competitive advantage. The general notion is that both technical and non-technical components of a firm require innovation (Papa et al., 2018), as well as most firms concentrate on the technical components (Amarakoon et al., 2018). Over the past few decades, non-technical sections have received innovation and research (Hamadamin & Atan, 2019). However, studies suggest that many firms neglected the Human Resources Management section and the roles of innovations in this section (Kang & Na, 2020).

Human Resource Management Innovations are new concepts that firms integrate into their human resource programs, systems, and practices for value addition (Hamadamin & Atan, 2019). In return, the concepts help the human resource system to adopt. Amarakoon et al. (2018) refer to HRMI as the generation and application of administration process, practice, technique, or structure new to modern and is projected to advance organizational goal. Therefore, HRMI adds value to the firm. According to Kang and Na (2020), HRMI is likely to be valuable and an essential source of competitive advantage. This emphasizes that HMRI can bring a competitive advantage while ensuring sustainability in the market. Additionally, the literature shows the need for innovation to move past the technical sections of the firm since the technical approach is not efficient enough to bring changes that will ensure the firm has a sustainable competitive advantage. Despite the attention that HRMI has on strategic human resource management, ways of understanding factors that enable effective embracing to guarantee competitive advantage are limited (Hamadamin & Atan, 2019). Therefore, the study will research ways to design and implement the process and contexts of HRMI to ensure the sustainability of competitive advantage.

Amazon should consider investing in organizational learning, explicitly targeting the Human Resources department. (Hamadamin and Atan (2019) insist that organizational learning is significant for innovation; therefore, firms seeking innovation need to nurture organizational learning culture. In addition, the level at which the HR functions makes the department crucial for the firm to realize the goals of gaining a competitive advantage. Besides, the mandate of the HR department is to ensure the training of their human capital. At Amazon, the role of the HR department is to design and implement a mechanism of learning for the workers (Kang & Na, 2020). Therefore, getting new knowledge on innovation needs to begin with them. Furthermore, the need for continuity in learning is significant for human resource functions. Sadly, learning and training activities were highly focused on other departments at Amazon (Caraway, 2020), neglecting the HR function level where the significant impact on gaining market dominance.

The research study aims to address the role of HRMI in ensuring competitive advantage while devising the applicability of HRMI to Amazon Company. Thereafter, our findings should contribute to the design and implementation of the HRMI initiative for the Amazon Company to gain a competitive advantage.

Definition of the Problem

Amazon Company has problems maintaining market dominance. Despite being among the top multinational companies, efforts to implement innovation in their operations face challenges in the dynamic market structure. However, consolidating their innovation efforts on HR functions can help the company in gaining market dominance, thereby having a competitive advantage.

Purpose of Research

The paper aims to understand the role of HMRI integration into the Human Resource functions at Amazon. Thereafter, identifying a design that will align with the Amazon HR program should ensure easy implementation of the innovative practices. Moreover, the research aims to make Amazon understand the process and method of HRMI to realize the benefits of gaining a competitive advantage.
