Course Information
Assignment Instructions |
Each of the assignments for this course is worth 25% of the final
. course grade, and consists of a single essay question. Make certain
that you make appropriate reference to the course readings, and to
any outside sources you might use, with in-text citations and a
complete bibliography. Note that you must use a consistent format for
citing references. For this course, we prefer that you use APA
(American Psychological Association) style.
Note that the Study Guide uses APA style and can be used as a
model. Refer to the APA links under the Resources section of
the course home page. You can also request a copy of the
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association
from the Athabasca University Library.
We strongly encourage you to go beyond the course materials as you
complete each of these assignments. You may draw on your readings,
newspaper articles, web pages, unit notes, personal experiences, and
interviews to develop an analysis. When drawing on newspaper
articles, do remember to note the details (date, section, and page
number) of any quotes used. When using web sites, remember to give
the full title, author (if identified), full URL, and the date on which you
retrieved the material. Note that the APA style guide discusses the
appropriate form for citing material from newspaper or web sources.
If you choose to write from your own experience, or to conduct
personal interviews, you must keep in mind the principles of informed
consent, privacy, and confidentiality. If you obtain information from
anyone for use in the essay, you must be certain to inform them of the
use to which you will put the information, and be sure that they agree
to have it used in that way. Since an essay of this type can have the
effect of accusing people of attitudes or actions that appear culpable,
without giving them the chance to respond, or of revealing details that
people might want to keep confidential, you should be sure not to use
the real names of the people or institutions you are describing.
Sometimes, even though names are not provided, the reader might be
able to identify the person or organization about whom the essay is
written, so identifying details should also be omitted. Your tutor will
hold your essay in confidence.
We provide this note, not to discourage you from writing from your
own experience, or from conducting interviews, but to remind you of
the ethical responsibilities taken on by anyone who does research on
