critical reading skills, and ease you into thinking and writing critically
about academic material before you tackle the longer essay.

Instructions: Write summaries for few I tate five articles from the
Reading Assignments in Unit 1. Each summary should be about 200 to
250 words long, for a total of about 800 to 1000 words for the whole
assignment. Remember that 250 to 275 words is equivalent to one
double-spaced, typed page, so your completed Assignment 1 should be
about 3 to 4 pages long.
In your summary, identify and summarize the author's main argument
and indicate how the author supports the argument with evidence. If the
author is drawing on a particular country and/or trade union, summarize
the author's key argument with reference to the country or the
particular trade union the article is focused on. If the author makes
several different points in the article, try to focus on the author's key

Your summaries must include the following information:

Assignment 2: Critical Review Essays

Length: Two essays of 450 to 500 words each (900 to 1000 words total)
Due: After you have completed Unit 2
Purpose: The purpose of Assignment 2 is to help you develop your
critical reading skills, and ease you into thinking and writing critically
about academic material before you tackle the longer essay. Another
purpose is to focus your reading and writing on the key issues for Unit 2.
Instructions: Write two critical review essays. These essays constitute
one assignment and must be submitted at the same time. Each essay
must be about 450 to 500 words long, or a total of about 900 to 1000
words for the whole assignment. Remember that 250 to 275 words is
equivalent to one double-spaced, typed page, so your entire Assignment
2 should be about 4 to 5 pages long.

2, Section 2.1: Gill Kirton, “The Influences on Women Joining and

2. Your second critical review must be one (not both) of the following
articles in Unit 2, Section 2.2:

Purpose: The purpose of Assignment 3 is to help you to do the
following: (1) think about the ways in which changes in workplace
organization and hiring strategies have affected female workers in
different countries, and (2) develop a sense of how women can
effectively respond to such changes to advance their interests.
Instructions: Write an essay of 1500 to 2000 words (6 to 8 pages) on the
struggle for change among women in the union movement. Your essay
must address each of the questions listed below. You do not have to
answer the questions with reference to all the countries explored in the
readings. Instead, answer the questions by focusing on some general
global trends, and provide a few country-specific examples to support
your answers.

1. What broad changes have taken place in work and employment
since the 1970s, and how has this restructuring changed the
relationship between women and unions? Provide several
examples of the effects of globalization on women’s relationship
with the trade union movement.

2. How have women organized to press for change in the union
movement? What methods have they used to raise issues of
concern to women and to obtain more equal representation?
Provide several examples of the organizing strategies and
methods used by women.

3. Where does separate organizing fit into women’s struggles for
change in the union movement? How successful has this strategy
been in terms of changing organizational structures and union
traditions? Be sure to provide examples to support your
argument.

experience in the labour movement, but remember that your
assignment must be based primarily on the course materials. You may
also draw on examples from readings in the supplementary readings list
or any other additional articles you might use to answer the question.

Assignment 4 requires you to apply ideas for making progress

Instructions: Write an essay of about 1500 words on the following topic:
What range of actions are minority groups taking to advance their
interests within the union movement, and what other actions could they
take to further their cause?
In your answer, focus on the different methods and strategies that
minority groups are currently using or might use to further their goals.
Think about what you have learned of these methods from other
sections of the course that discuss the strategies used by women for
pressing their issues. Give examples to illustrate the types of actions that
you suggest. You may give suggestions from your own experience, as :
well as from the materials provided, but you must apply them
appropriately to the union context.

the topics listed below (each topic is of equal value).

3. Do the experiences of organizing informal workers in India, or
