In the Module 4 Discussion, you considered how professional nurses can become involved in policy-making. A critical component of any policy design is evaluation of the results. How comfortable are you with the thought of becoming involved with such matters?
Some nurses may be hesitant to get involved with policy evaluation. The preference may be to focus on the care and well-being of their patients; some nurses may feel ill-equipped to enter the realm of policy and political activities. However, as you have examined previously, who better to advocate for patients and effective programs and polices than nurses? Already patient advocates in interactions with doctors and leadership, why not with government and regulatory agencies?

Post an explanation of at least two opportunities that currently exist for RNs and APRNs to actively participate in policy review. Explain some of the challenges that these opportunities may present and describe how you might overcome these challenges. Finally, recommend two strategies you might make to better advocate for or communicate the existence of these opportunities. Be specific and provide examples.
Answer:
Opportunities.
Volunteer to participate in policy meetings or related activities
RNs and APRNs have the responsibility and capacity to influence the existing and prospected policy reviews since they have a chance of influencing a policy review by ensuring that the policies promoted are effective in their roles. Getting a chance to participate in policy meetings or other related activities gives you an opportunity to be part of the policy review team and you can access this opportunity through volunteering.
Join a professional nursing organization.
Professional organizations such as the American Nurses Association(ANA), Emergency Nurses Association(ENA). the American Academy of Nursing(AAN) can be used by RNs and APRNs to review certain policies. Professional organizations ensure that any policy that is implemented is effective and favors the nurses at any circumstance and thus being part of any of the organizations gives you a chance to participate in policy review.
Challenges.
Some nurses are not updated on the policies that are being proposed and/or need to be reviewed. In such a case, the nurses need to be informed on the dates of the policy change meetings for them to be able to volunteer and attend. We can overcome this by being informed of the policy changes and the trending policies that are awaiting implementation.
The challenge of poor leadership also affects nurses who want to participate in policy review in that they don't give nurses the chance to grow as needed. Health care leaders are the ones to lead and give chances to the RNs and APRNs to volunteer in the policy related meetings and activities. We can overcome this by having good leadership models that allows nurses to grow.
Complex process when it comes to acquiring membership. A complex process is needed for nurses to join some of the professional nursing organizations and thus posing a major challenge. This can be overcomed by implementing clear and easy processes that nurses should follow to join the organizations.
