Netflix is not and will not become a monopoly even though it is likely to retain its market leader position for a long time. Netflix is an American productions company, media services provider, and distributor that primarily provides a subscription-based video streaming service to its consumers. The company had 148 million paid subscribers as of 2019 and generated US$20.156 billion in revenue and US$1.866 billion in profits during the same year. It boasts a budget that is three times that of its closest competitor and its market ownership is 50%. The market share of its closest competitor is 20%.

That being said, a market's type is dependent on its attributes. Netflix operates in a market that resembles an oligopoly with many large players, like Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, MUBI, to name a few, operating in competition with each other. There is no legal barrier to entry in this market and the product is not unique and cannot be monopolized by any one player. Additionally, the streaming giant's growing market share and profits indicate the changing consumer attitude that is substituting theatrical experience with an in-house video-on-demand subscription. This in itself is also not conducive to monopolization. Companies like Apple and Disney are aggressively investing in their streaming services and they are likely to become a tough competition to Netflix in terms of content.

The traits that indicate Netflix's domination of the market are its increasing influence on Millennials and its transformation into a cultural icon. "Netflix and chill" has become a popular phrase of the vernacular, almost everywhere, with dating sites mentioning the same in their users' profile and, hence, passively promoting the streaming giant. The only way to ensure an edge in the market is to maintain superiority in terms of quality and a strong distribution network that reaches out to all segments of consumers and all types of audiences.
