MPH610 Assignment #1: Health Issue Topic Proposal

10% of course grade / 20 points

By the end of this course, students will develop an intervention grant proposal for a contemporary public health issue using a social and behavioral health lens. Class activities and assignments will build on one another to support this process.

The purpose of this first assignment is to help each student identify a health topic to focus on throughout the course and in the student’s grant proposal.

The best topics for this course are health issues that are influenced by one’s personal behavior and/or social factors. The topic you choose should be directly related to social and behavioral determinants, as opposed to biological. Please choose a topic that is broad enough to explore from many angles, but specific enough that you are able to focus in. For example, if you are interested in sexual and reproductive health, you might want to focus your scope in on STI prevention among youth but not box yourself in to chlamydia prevention among high schoolers. Papers submitted on topics that are primarily biological/genetic in nature or which only describe biological risk factors will be returned for re-write.

Instructions:

Compose a 2-page concept proposal for a health topic of interest to explore in this course. Conduct a literature search and use find data sources to conduct a preliminary investigation into the social and behavioral determinants of that health issue. Provide a summary of the issue using the following structure:

  1. Introduction/Background

Clearly describe the public health importance of the health topic. Describe what populations or communities are most affected, what the risk factors are associated with the health issue, and what disparities exist around the health issue. Cite sources and do not speak in broad or general terms.

  1. Current interventions

Describe the types of interventions that are currently popular around this health topic, including policy (if any). Describe the challenges faced in public health for improving health outcomes. Identify key limitations that exist in the literature around the topic (what do we not yet know?). Cite your sources.

  1. Direction for this course

Describe the types of theories or social and behavioral health determinants you are especially interested in exploring around this health topic. Justify why you believe this topic is relevant to social and behavioral health. Identify 2-3 key social or behavioral factors directly related to the health issue.

Please use APA writing style and properly cite at least 3-4 supporting scholarly articles in your proposal. Proposals should be turned in via Engage no later than Sunday 11:59pm.

If you have questions about this assignment, please post them in the General Discussion board in Engage.
