Writing

The company's vice president of human resources has approached your team for assistance in recruiting and developing the organization's future leaders. About 60% of the company consists of millennials, and your team has been charged with how to successfully increase the number of millennials as leaders in the organization. At this time, members of senior management are reluctant and uninformed as to how they should promote the millennials as leaders. This first step is to create a plan.

Write a 500- to 600-word summary in which your team:

  • Examines the best practices that your team can cultivate to enhance the number of millennial leaders.
  • Explains how you would present this information to the senior managers in the organization.

Answer:

Formulating Leadership

We, representing the Human Resources Management team were assigned to assist our Vice President of Human Resources with recruiting and developing our organization's future leaders. 60% of our company consists of millennials, and our team has been charged with how to successfully increase the number of millennials as leaders in your organization. The senior management has been reluctant and uninformed as to how they should promote the millennials as leaders. The way we’ve decided to solve this issue was through creating a plan, in which we will provide the best practices our team can cultivate in order to enhance the number of millennial leaders. Also, we will present the information to our senior managers and explain to them how our plan will contribute to the success of our organization.

Developing and coaching tomorrow’s leaders can be quite a challenge especially for the millennials. In order to effectively develop millennial leaders, there are various strategies that can be employed. First, it is important as the motivator to convey an expectation of results. Millennials feel motivated when they have a sense of accomplishment and this makes them aim higher. In addition, millennial leaders can be developed by making them understand the context within which they carry out their activities (Luttrell and McGrath, 2015). When millennials feel and understand how they fit within a certain organization or a specific team, this helps to keep them on their toes and they fuel their efforts.

Additionally, millennial leaders can be developed by fostering in them a mindset that pays focus to entrepreneurial thinking as well as creativity. The millennial generation comprises of people who are very keen when it comes to innovation and they love acting as agents of change in the respective areas of work. Therefore, when they are given the opportunity to do so, this move is a motivation for them to become leaders. The millennial leaders can also be developed by listening to them and also giving them a voice so as to create an opportunity for leadership and career development (Wang, 2016). It is important to give millennials the opportunity to take part, for instance, in focus groups and committees so that leadership traits can be initiated in them.

In addition to the above, millennial leaders can be developed by offering them opportunities to participate in community activities such as giving back to their communities. This would help to cultivate passion and a sense of belonging to them and they would be encouraged to take leadership positions. Concisely, in order to develop millennial leaders, it requires a holistic and multifaceted approach. Dynamism and intention must also be employed (Wang, 2016).

When it comes to presenting this information to senior management, it needs to be done so with a good bit of tact. Take the information on the different personnel in the millennial group and show the senior staff how millennials think and operate, after which show how that will better the company overall. Also express clearly that this is a necessary course of action to fulfill the goals of the company farther down the line. By creating this understanding of how this new group works, it is believed by this group that the overall consensus will be that this is a detrimental step in growth.

Conclusion

There are many approaches that can be taken to develop millennials in to successful leaders. When 60% of a company is millennials it is important to the growth of the company to be able to develop the millennials into great leaders. Millennials will be the future of the company. We will increase the number of millennial leaders through coaching and development. We, the current leaders, have to be the motivators. The course of action that will be taken to coach and develop them will be through motivating, listening, opportunity, empowerment and giving them a sense of belonging to the organization. We will also give them opportunities to take part in group tasks to learn leadership traits. As an organization, we have to understand that millennials are our next future leaders and how we develop them will determine the success of the company.
