One skillset that I have used in the Target model is, confusion. Thinking back, I noticed that as an Asian woman, I have contradicted myself and doubted the evidence of my own senses. Other students were racist towards me because I was Asian and the ways I was doing things in school weren't "American-like". I thought it was wrong for them to make hateful comments towards me, but I didn't do anything about it or called it as racist. I just internalized it. Before I have the skillset, confusion, I have gone through survival. According to Nieto and Boyer, survival skills “enable us to stay alive and in relative safety by conforming to Agent expectations” (49). Just like some of the men have said in the documentary, Color of Fear, as people of color, we have to assimilate and change our ways to be more “American”. We do this, not because we don’t cherish our culture, but to avoid the whole idea of racism.
One skillset that I have never used and want to develop is Empowerment. This specific skillset scares me because it requires me to step out of my comfort zone and speak up for what is right. For example, people started hating on my people because to them, it was our fault the United States is going through the pandemic. During this event, I felt useless because I didn't know how to help my Asian community. I wanted to join a Target group, but I didn't know how and what I can bring to the table.
Thinking through these skillsets allow me to practice action as a port of entry into intercultural praxis. Being able to analyze these models allows me to understand what is needed for each skillset in order to be able to understand my culture and the cultures of others. Understanding is not enough but knowing how to stand up for what is right, voice my thoughts, and protect our cultures. Overall, these skillsets allow us to better engage in intercultural praxis but encouraging us to inquire and reflect.
