2?Minute Multimedia Elevator Pitch on Public Health Topic Guidelines

Introduction

The purpose of completing a 2?minute multimedia elevator pitch on your public health topic is to gain skills in preparing a concise, carefully planned, and well?practiced marketing message about a topic and delivering it in a way that your mother should be able to understand in the time it would take to ride up an elevator. Your “pitch” should contain a “hook” or “theme” and go no longer than 2 minutes; resonate with the unique features of your topic and contain a brief recap that could lead to a follow up request for a business card, a referral, or future meeting. This skill will help get your foot in the door with potential employers when the topic is your professional self and your unique personality and interests, whether on the phone, e?mail or in person at a conference, chance social networking event, or through an informal face?to?face chance encounter through a friend or relative.  You will draw on the information presented in your ‘Position Paper on Public Health Topic’ submitted in Module 7 to complete this assignment. The elevator pitch is due in Module 8. 

 

Prepare Your Pitch

  1. Understand the purpose of your pitch
    1. Figure out what the primary components of your public health topic are and what makes it important.
    2. Deliver an effective message that entices your listener to want to know more and/or take action.
    3. Concisely and memorably introduce your topi This allows you to succinctly and positively position yourself in the mind of the listener.
    4. Get your listener to like you and relate to your topic. An elevator pitch isn't much good if first you don't come across as a credible, likeable individual.
  2. Prepare
    1. Begin by writing down hard facts about your public health topic (i.e., relationship of the topic to public health, factors and policies that have contributed to the topic)
    2. Write down soft points about your public health topic that could be the most meaningful to your listener (i.e., who is most affected by the topic, what it means to you personally, what you believe could/should be done about it and why) 
    3. Assign time limits to each area (e.g., Introduction of topic?30 seconds, factors and policies?30 seconds, those most affected?30 seconds, solutions?30 seconds, etc)
  3. Content to include:
    1. Introduce yourself
    2. Description of your public health topic
    3. Factors/policies that have contributed to your public health topic
    4. Description of those most affected by your topic and how it relates to you personally e. Discussion of potential solutions

    2. Maintain focus on your public health topic
    3. Articulate what you’ve learned
    4. Ensure that your pitch is no longer than 2 minutes in length
    5. Practice so that the delivery is natural, conversational, and effortless
    6. Imagine that you’re looking directly at the person to whom you’re speaking

 

This is an individual project, so you should be the only person heard in your audio recording. You may even want to wear professional attire so that you practice giving an elevator pitch as if you were actually doing so in an elevator, in a job interview, or social networking event. 

 

Be sure to review the grading rubric for this assignment. Not adhering to these guidelines will result in point deductions from the final paper grade.

 

Instructions

You will need a microphone, headphones (or earphones), and audio recording software. If you do not have software capable of making a recording that you can save, there are several free recorders available on the web. One website that is simple to use is Online Voice Recorder. However, you still need a microphone. Headphones/earphones make it easier for you to play back your recording before submitting it.

 

Recording Your Pitch

After preparing your pitch on paper and reading through it, proceed to use the Online Voice Recorder

  1. Make sure you have a microphone plugged in (or turned on if it is built?in)
  2. Go to the Online Voice Recorder
  3. If your microphone is properly connected and available, you will see it listed in the gray box near the record button
  4. Press the red button when you are ready to record  
  5. If you receive the Flash Player settings, “Allow” the application to access the microphone.
  6. You will see the indicator moving across the screen as your voice is being recorded. Click on the green button (with square inside) to stop recording. 
  7. You can play back your recording by clicking on the green button with the arrow (you must have headphones or speakers in order to hear your recording). 
  8. If the recording is not satisfactory, you can record again by selecting the “record again” button. 
  9. If the recording is satisfactory, you can move on to the next step to save it. Click on the Save button on the far right side of the gray recording box.
  10. As your recording is being saved, a progress counter will keep you informed. 
  11. In order to save your file to your computer, you will need to select the “Click to Save” button.
  12. In the file save box, select the folder on your computer in which you want to save your file. You may also save it to the desktop to make it easy to find. Also change the file name to your first and last name so that your file is easy to identify.
  13. Once you have saved your file, go to Blackboard, go to the assignment dropbox for this assignment. Attach your recording by browsing your computer. You may add a comment for your instructor in the Comment box below that.
