The Life Orientation Test (20 points)

Scheier and Carver’s Life Orientation Test (1985), measures a respondent’s optimism, or expectations regarding the favorability of future outcomes. In scoring the scale, you should reverse their responses to items 3, 8, 9, and 12 (0 = 4, 1 = 3, 2 = 2, 3 = 1, 4 = 0), and then add up their responses to items 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, and 12 to obtain a final score (items 2, 6, 7, and 10 are filler items). Scores can range from 0 to 32, with higher scores reflecting greater optimism. The mean score is approximately 21.
