Mrs. Thomas has made the decision to move to a long-term care facility.  When you visit her in her room, she expresses doubts, sadness, and feelings of worthlessness. She states that she is so lonely and unable to care for herself and her large home alone. (Learning Objectives 1, 3,4, 5, 6)

1.Review with Mrs. Thomas the type of care settings available and what each has to offer her.    

2.You sense a great deal of anxiety in talking with Mrs. Thomas regarding her future. What are some nursing considerations regarding anxiety in the elderly? 

3.As Mrs. Thomas is talking, you become concerned that she is exhibiting signs of depression. Why is depression in the elderly such a concern?

4. What is available to combat the depression?   

5. What medication will be prescribed for Mrs. Thomas for for depression?

6. Dicuss the medication indication and side effects.

 

 

1. A diabetic male H.Y, 72 years of age, is being treated at home for a foot ulcer. He lives with his daughter, her husband, and their two children. H. Y. has been living in his daughter’s house for 8 months. What are the advantages for the client, for married couple, and for the children to have H. Y. reside in this home? What are possible disadvantages? What additional information would be needed?

 2. Your neighbor G. K., age 79 years, states that she is so stiff she can hardly move in the morning. During your conversation, she says that she still drives but states she does not bother to get groceries unless it is absolutely necessary. She asks you if you can help her move the TV. Would you have any concerns about this individual? Discuss the concerns that might need further investigation? State the reasons for your responses.

 3. At the local department store, you met a friend you have not seen for a long time. She is a retired adult female, age 66. You notice that she has bruises on both her arms and seems to have lost a lot of weight. As a nurse, what might be the approach of your conversation? Are you obligated to report your observations to adult protective services? Debate and discuss this situation with your classmates. What additional information is necessary?
