Educational Psychology
A school teacher contacted the educational psychologist regarding Andrew, a 10-year old student that has been presenting some concerning behaviours. The teacher initially described Andrew’s behaviour as anxiety and social avoidance, as he doesn’t like to participate in class and his performance has been declining. However, he appears to enjoy interaction, albeit playing with only one classmate at a time. At lunchtime, he refuses to eat and reports feeling sick. The teacher noticed that other classmates stopped trying to interact with him and occasionally might make fun of him. Andrew’s parents report that he doesn’t play with friends at home as he doesn’t have any. According to his parents, before going to school, he complains that he is not feeling well and that he does not like to be around any other children. Andrew’s parents also mentioned to the teacher that he refuses to go anywhere and do not like to leave the house. Andrew’s father has been previously diagnosed with general anxiety disorder. His parents told the teacher that Andrew has always been a shy boy and does not like new situations.
