HLTH 230- Balanced Meals Instructions

Your task is to create images of 3 meals that accurately represent a healthy meal according the principles found within Canada’s food guide. An example of the image is shown at the following link: Canada’s Food Guide Poster.

The purpose of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your understanding of the principles of the food guide while developing your own sense of proportion and healthy eating.

STEP 1

Design a breakfast, a lunch, and a dinner that fulfill the ideal plate image of Canada’s Food Guide. This means your images need to meet the proper proportions depicted and meet the recommendations made in the text surrounding the plate. You need to include a beverage with each meal and yes it can be the same beverage at each meal. One of the 3 meals must be vegetarian and please indicate the specific type of vegetarian (vegan, lacto- vegetarian, ovo-vegetarian or lacto-ovo vegetarian). (Yes, all 3 meals can be vegetarian if you wish).

Please take photos of 3 meals you prepare, like you would do for Instagram, Snapchat or Twitter. If you cannot take pictures of your own meals, you can create meal images using your computer. If images are taken from the internet, they images need to be for each of the food items on the plate and need to be arranged as though the are on a plate.   You cannot take an image of a total plate from the internet.

Clearly label all of the following elements:

a title that indicates whether the meal is breakfast, lunch, or dinner

indicate which is the vegetarian meal and the type of vegetarian (for example: vegan, lacto-vegetarian)

the name of each food or beverage (for example: arctic char or wild rice or whole-grain pasta, or whole-grain rye bread or strawberry yogurt or boiled spinach etc.).

the food group each food or beverage represents (i.e., vegetables and fruits, protein, or whole grains)

For Example:

In an image titled Lunch (Vegetarian - vegan), I might have one section of the plate which is labelled Chopped Fruit Salad: Bananas, Apples, Pears, and Grapes (Vegetables and Fruits). Another section of the plate might be Stir-fried Tofu (Protein).

Additional Criteria:

Your images must be clear and the foods clearly identifiable. Please note, separating the foods on the plate as they are on the food guide will make things very clear but if they are not completely separated this way, the foods and proportions need to be very identifiable.  Any ambiguity will result in a lower grade.

Start early, so you can plan to make 3 meals that have elements that can be easily identified and separated on a plate to properly illustrate the food guide. If you choose distorted images (ex. giant piece of broccoli) or choose to photograph foods like smoothies, stews, or casseroles you are not providing clear examples and your mark will reflect this.

If you are not sure which food group a food belongs to on Canada's Food Guide, it is up to you to research this. The food guide website (Canada's Food Guide) is a great resource. If you are still not sure where a food belongs, consider choosing a different food.  Instructor will not answer questions about what foods belong to what food group.

STEP 2

For this assignment please use Word and submit both parts on one document. Your assignment must be uploaded as either a Word document or a PDF file. PDF is recommended to help preserve the formatting.

Formatting:

Step 1: 1 or 2 meals per page.

Step 2: Maximum 2 pages, double spaced (including citations), 12 point font, Arial or Times New Roman, with 1-inch margins. Be sure step 2 starts on a fresh page. TAs will not read beyond the page limit.

Referencing: Referencing must be APA 7. Images must be referenced (unless they are your own photos) and these references can be listed after step 1 or as part of the reference list at the end. The reference list at the end does not count in the page limit.  Be sure to include high quality scholarly references, including mainly journal articles, to support your answer for step 2. Do not reference the course modules. Go back to MindTap/textbook or the source instead but in order to get the best possible grade, use journal articles.
