HSH206 You should explain why this organisation is needed to support Australian families

Health Science

HSH206

You should explain why this organisation is needed to support Australian families. In doing so, you need to:

1. Define the issue/challenge they are addressing (e.g., relationship issues, separation/divorce, financial disadvantage, stigma).

2. Identify how many Australian families are affected by this issue/challenge (e.g., with statistics).

Note: Please use official statistics, such as those from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) or the Australian Institution of Families Studies (AIFS)

3. Briefly explain why this issue/challenge might occur in families, with links to ONE family theory.

Note: Theories you can choose from are Family Development Theory, Family System Theory, Structural Functionalism theory, Feminist theory, Conflict theory, Exchange theory and Symbolic Interaction theory.

Helpful hint

In terms of the theories, you need to think about the process underlying the issue/challenge the family is seeking support for. For example, has a change in one aspect of the family's life caused changes in other aspects (e.g., Systems Theory)? Has the balance of costs versus benefits changed (e.g., Exchange Theory)?

Here is an example that might help you to make links between an issue and theory:

Domestic and family violence, which is more commonly perpetrated by men against women and children, may occur as a way for one person to exert control and assert one’s power over another. Indeed, perpetrators of domestic violence have been shown to display particular characteristics towards their partners, including control, entitlement, superiority, possessiveness, manipulation and victim blaming (Bancroft & Silverman cited in Child, Family, Community Australia, 2010).

Symbolic interactionism is a theory that views the family as a site of social reproduction where meanings are negotiated and maintained by family members. It also acts as a framework for understanding how individuals interact with each other and within society through the meanings of symbols. Research has found violence against women is enabled by societies through adherence to rigidly defined gender roles and the unequal distribution of power and resources between men and women (White Ribbon Australia, 2021). While most Australians do not hold attitudes that support violence, beliefs that enable gender inequality are more widespread. For example, in 2017 one in five Australians thought ‘men should take control in relationships and be the head of the household’, and more than one in four Australians thought women ‘prefer a man to be in charge’ (VicHealth cited in White Ribbon Australia, 2021). These beliefs could be transferred to the way men and women behave within their relationships, and thus contribute to violence in the family unit.

PART 2

Outline (with supporting references) three specific strategies families can adopt to manage the effects of depression among adolescents (12-18 years old).

Strategies may relate to any of the following categories:

•             implementing coping mechanisms

•             changing behaviours or practices

•             adopting certain parenting styles (most relevant to issues affecting children/adolescents)

•             adapting environments/settings

•             using specific programs or family support services

There are different acceptable approaches to this discussion. For example, you can choose one strategy from three different categories, such as one change in behaviour, one adaption to an environment (e.g. housing) and the use of one family support service. Alternatively, you could choose several strategies from one category. For example, you might focus on three coping mechanisms or perhaps one change in behaviour and the use of two family support services.

However, when presenting this discussion, it is important to be clear whether each strategy is aimed at preventing the issue from occurring or managing the issue once it has emerged. Remember that you need to be providing clear information to families!
