Essay Topics and Details

Your essay constitutes 40% of the overall mark for this unit and strictly has a strict 2500 word limit (not including cover page and reference list). Be sure that you focus your essay on

ONE of the specified essay topics below. Additionally, please use empirical research to support your argument/position. You will find some starting references to help you. You can use these when writing your essay and we also suggested that you read them as a starting point to help you generate ideas.

Please choose one of the following three topics to write your essay on.

1. Recent research suggests potential negative impact of online dating apps use on psychological health (e.g., addiction. depression and anxiety). Discuss factors that may be involved in explaining the negative effects of using dating apps on mental health. Is this impact specific to gender and/or ethnic background? From your own perspective, reflect on the negative impact of these apps on mental health both in the literature you reviewed and the wider media.

2. Much research has demonstrated the role of peer bullying in schools as a risk factor of

a variety of mental health issues (e.g., depression, anxiety, aggressive behaviours)

among children and adolescents. Compare and evaluate any two evidence-based

interventions that are available for preventing or reducing bullying in school settings.

What are the key components of these anti-bullying interventions, and how might

they address school bullying? From your own perspective, reflect on how effective

these interventions are.

3. Health care workers often carry stigma against people with mental illness. This can

potentially compromise the effectiveness of patient care. Compare and evaluate any

two interventions that can be used to reduce stigma in health care workers. How

effective are these interventions, and how do they work to lower stigma towards

mental illness? From your own perspective, reflect on how you could reduce your

own stigma when working or interacting with people with mental illness.

How many references should I have and where should I find them?

While there is no set number of references that you will be required to use, it is suggested that

you cite a minimum of seven (including the starting reference) quality empirical references

(e.g. journal articles, reviews, etc.), from 2013 onwards, to support the arguments that you

put forward in your essay. However, please avoid using anything that is a dissertation or

thesis. Book chapters, meta-analyses, and literature reviews are okay.

What is an essay with a reflection?

For this assignment, the introduction and body paragraphs will be a traditional essay where

each paragraph highlights a key point and is supported by academic and scholarly sources.

For the conclusion, you will combine a traditional conclusion of the evidence given

throughout the essay with a personal reflection on the topic. This should focus primarily on

the reflection component of your essay topic. Because you are incorporating personal

reflection in your conclusion, you are encouraged to use first-person language (i.e. “I think”,

“I believe”) in your conclusion in order to distinguish what your thoughts are, versus your

summary of the literature.

A reflection should cover the following things:

? Description – What is the concept, idea or theory you are reflecting on?

? Analysis – Are there aspects you found particularly interesting or challenging? Does it

tie in with anything you have learned in the past? Has it changed the way you think,

or affirmed something you already knew?

? Outcomes or Action – What else might you need or want to find out about the topic

after your review of the literature? Do you have any questions about the literature that

you feel are still unanswered? How might you incorporate or apply these ideas in the

future, such as in your professional life?
