Signature: ……………………………………………………………… Analytical Essay – Comparison and contrast of two texts Many people can relate to feeling different from other individuals at some point in their lives. The two texts ‘Smelly Melly’ is written by Elli Housden (2009) who has taught English in Australia and UK while publishing textbooks and stories (Nelson, 2017) and ‘In a Class of Her Own’ is by Alice Fermor (2009). These are two of the short stories in a collection of stories called ‘Five Senses: 15 Short Stories’, which are mainly for lower secondary school students (Book Depository, n.d.). The two short stories are about a new girl arriving in a new environment, and the shared theme of these texts is “being different” as it impacts young people. Although they contain a similar theme, the tone and the message of each text is contradictory. As being different can mean either negative or positive, young readers can sympathise with both types of being different. This following essay will analyse the main features of ‘Smelly Melly’ and ‘In a Class of Her Own’. It will then include comparison and contrast of these texts and a final comment on their overall effectiveness. In the short story ‘Smelly Melly’, Housden employs derogatory language and literary devices to evoke a negative tone effectively. Her story highlights the negative impact of being different as the main character Melanie Rose gets taunted by her classmates as she seems unfamiliar from other students. The author uses repetition and rhyming when her classmates were teasing her, “Rose, Rose, big nose” and “Melly, Melly, oh so smelly”. However, this does not imply that Rose has a big nose, nor she is smelly, but it is effectively employed to connect with the setting in a primary school, so the reader can see the immaturity of the young students. Furthermore, the rhyming was efficiently applied to make the phrases sound more like a song which the reader can actually enjoy. However, the words like “smelly” and “a big nose” that rhyme with her name also make the reader sympathise with Rose as they can understand those words can hurt a young girl. Another literary device the author utilises is a simile. One example is when Rose was sitting alone, “she sat so still that she looked more like a rock or a fossil than a twelve year old girl, Petrified”. This creates a powerful image for the reader to imagine that she was sitting so still and anxiously in her new environment. Additionally, “a rock or a fossil” evokes the sense of being hard and cold, which are also negative words that generate the theme of being different as a negative impact. In another short story ‘In a Class of Her Own’, Fermor addresses the theme of being different positively by using optimistic language and effective literary devices. The story’s main character is a girl named Erin who came to the city by herself to play tennis that she loves. As 1 Analytical Essay – Comparison and contrast of two texts the story evolves, the reader can realise that Erin not only loves playing tennis but also is an expert in it as Fermor describes her tennis, “hitting clearly”, “followed his (the coach’s) instruction perfectly” and “clean up her opposition”. The adverbs like “clearly” and “perfectly” leads the reader to imagine how skilful and talented Erin is. Furthermore, the example of connotation was employed in a phrase, “clean up her opposition”, as the hidden meaning is that she clearly beats every opposition that she plays with. The author shows rather than telling the reader how good, special and different Erin is among other tennis players. Fermor also uses repetition with the personal pronoun “we”. For instance, when Erin was playing with the coach the watchers were described as “we smiled…we laughed…we cheered”. The repetition of “we” makes the reader think that not only one person is admiring her but almost everyone is because it is a strong pronoun to include all the individuals. These literary devices successfully help the reader to perceive the positive theme of being different. The two short stories have similarities and differences which help to elicit contrasting emotional responses from the reader. Both short stories are concerned with the theme of being different and they include literary devices to clarify. One particular literary device that the authors employ is a juxtaposition. For example, in ‘Smelly Melly’, Housden begins by comparing the main character “huddled in the far corner of the playground” and the other classmates “racing past her, shouting and whooping over their wild games”. This situation presents a juxtaposition as the main character is sad, quiet and alone while the other students are excited, happy and energetic. In ‘In a Class of Her Own’, Fermor also uses juxtaposition in the feelings expressed by the narrator. At first, the narrator introduces her feeling directly as she states, “I was immediately envious”. However, later when she claims that, “we were all fascinated by this girl of our own age”, it clearly shows the contradiction of the feeling as now she reveals more admiration and respect towards the main character as she was different from others. The significant difference between these two texts is the writer’s point of view. Whereas the third person point of view is utilised in ‘Smelly Melly’, the first person point of view is employed in ‘In a Class of Her Own’. In Fermor’s story someone telling the story is effective as it builds the reader’s empathy towards the main character. In addition, this emotional appeal also persuades the reader that being different can sometimes be difficult. By using the first person in Housden’s story, the reader can directly feel the author’s admiration and respect towards the main character. This is important as the author has the intention to convince the reader to feel the optimistic side of being independent and different from others. 2 Analytical Essay – Comparison and contrast of two texts In conclusion, this essay has analysed the two texts ‘Smelly Melly’ and ‘In a Class of Her Own’ which present the theme of being ‘an outsider’ in different ways. In ‘Smelly Melly’, Housden directs the reader to the reality that being different is not helpful in fitting into society and adjusting to the new environment. However, in ‘In a Class of Her Own’, Fermor claims that although the main character may have difficulties in adjusting to a new environment and being distinctive among others, it is admirable and worthy to be different. I personally believe that ‘Smelly Melly’ is more effective because it allows the reader to clearly understand the theme of “being different” and how this impacts young people. Furthermore, the third person perspective made an objective view of the characters, which is more persuasive to admit the fact that being different can follow hardships. I can personally relate to this story as I was once a new student when I had to go to a different country. It was very similar to the situation of Melanie Rose as I was moving due to my father’s business and I felt that I was different from other students, both physically and socially. Fortunately, I have never had an experience like Melanie, which contributed to me feeling a great deal of empathy for her. 3 Analytical Essay – Comparison and contrast of two texts References Book Depository. Analytical Essay – Comparison and contrast of two texts Almost every person knows about the story of Titanic, which was the largest luxury liner in the world. The ship sank in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912 during its maiden voyage in a tragic incident, whose impact was felt across the world. The two texts being analysed in this essay are “The Titanic” by David R. Slavitt and “The Convergence of the Twain” by Thomas Hardy. These two poems focus on the story of Titanic and the fate that befell it on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. The ship sank after hitting an iceberg, which caused water to enter into the ship. The sinking of the Titanic was an accident that resulted in the deaths of both the famous and unknown people. Even though the ship had been declared unsinkable, this was not the case after it hit an iceberg. The essay below provides an analysis of the two poems “The Titanic” and “The Convergence of the Twain” in order to show some of the key features of these poems. In addition, the analysis goes on to compare and contrast the two poems as well as providing comments on the effectiveness of these two pieces. In the poem, “The Titanic”, David R. Slavitt utilizes satire and an ironic tone to portray the reality of life, where all people end up dead regardless of their status in the society. The main theme of the poem is death, as the author asserts that death can at time be viewed as a positive or negative thing depending on how one dies. The poet uses a specific choice of words to make the satirical poem pure irony. He satirizes the people’s vanity suggesting that people will choose to pursue attention seeking motives and prize glamour while others are unknown and without status in the society. However, “We all go down …” as all people end up dead at some point. Slavitt portrays the tragedy that befell those in the Titanic as a befitting one as they got the chance to go down in “a great way.” The rich and famous people in the ship had the option to “with crowds of people, friends, servants, well fed, with music, with lights”, which is an opportunity that most people would willingly take. The author asserts that death is an unpleasant fact that cannot be avoided by anyone and life will always end the same for all 1 Analytical Essay – Comparison and contrast of two texts people no matter how famous or unknown they may be in the society. Slavvitt uses a metaphor when he closes the poem by saying that “We all go: only a few, first class”, which asserts to the nature of death. This metaphor implies that while death is inevitable and certain for every person, only a few people will enjoy the privilege of dying and getting their names in the books of history across the world. While most people die and are forgotten easily, such people who make it to the books of history will always be remembered such as those who died in the Titanic. In the poem “The Convergence of the Twain” by Thomas Hardy, the author provides a recount of the incidents that took place leading to the downfall of the legendary and glorious Titanic. The theme of the poem is the pride of man and how this leads to their doom due to their actions and motives that move against God’s will. While the Titanic was termed by its creators as being unsinkable, as its creators proclaimed it to be, this proved to have sealed the doom of the ship and all its occupants who died as the ship sank in the ocean. The poem uses symbolism to describe the Titanic ship and the events the led to its sinking. The poet focuses on the nature of relationships that have existed among the human beings, nature, and the supernatural power that controls the unforeseen events in life (Hardy, 1912). The author uses a critical tone towards the proud and self-confident nature of the human beings. The poet indicates that the hedonistic qualities of the human beings can cause them to engage in extravagant activities that could often offend God due to pride and vanity they pursue. The poet uses the metonym, “pride of life” to refer to humankind and their human vanity, which he disapproves. The poem suggests that it is the actions taken by man, during the construction of the Titanic, that established a conflict between man, God, and nature. Using a critical tone, the poet shows the connection between the “Pride of Life” and the “Immanent will” as having resulted in the tragedy. “Jewels in joy designed, to ravish the sensuous mind” (Hardy, 1912). The ship was a 2 Analytical Essay – Comparison and contrast of two texts great invention that had seen man consumed in his own pride that he could not consider the immanent will, which would eventually lead the ship to its own tragic fate that has been acclaimed across the world. As the author suggests, “Alien they seemed to be; No mortal eye could see”, the attempts made by human will always prove futile against the divine power of God and nature. There are various similarities and differences between the two poems, which are key in enabling the readers to understand the various themes raised and evoke different responses. The two poems are focusing on the Titanic, describing the incidents that took place causing the ship to sink in as much as it resulted in the deaths of the people on board. The poets use irony in these poems as a way of representing their position on the sinking of the ship (Slavitt, 2011). In “The Titanic”, Slavitt suggests “The cold water is anaesthetic and very quick” and “The cries on all sides must be a comfort”. These are purely ironical statements describing the atmosphere experienced by the people in the Titanic as it was sinking. While this was not a desirable moment, it was far better and memorable than other means through which people die and are forgotten. In “The Convergence of the Twain”, Hardy uses iron in contrasting the Titanic as “This creature of cleaving wing” and the iceberg as the “Prepared a sinister mate” who were meant to be married (Slavitt, 2011). On the other hand, the difference between the two poems arises in the points of views taken by the authors regarding death and the entire tragedy. Slavitt views the tragedy as one that resulted in better death that would see the victims get in the history books as they are mourned across the world while Hardy views the tragedy as having been a result of the conflict between human vanity, God’s will, and nature. The essay has provided an analysis of the two poems, “The Titanic” by David R. Slavitt and “The Convergence of the Twain” by Thomas Hardy. In “The Titanic”, the author seeks to show 3 Analytical Essay – Comparison and contrast of two texts the readers that in the world of reality, people may be remembered for various reasons and how one dies can be a major determinant of whether they will be forgotten or remembered forever. Those who died in the Titanic had the opportunity to be remembered forever, which most people would give anything to get. The author suggests that while death is inevitable for all the people, how one dies could eventually determine how they are remembered in the books of history. In “The Convergence of the Twain”, Hardy claims that the human vanity eventually leads to their destruction as their plans can never outwit nature or God’s plan. The situations described in these poems are relatable to my personal life, as I believe that while we may be able to plan, it may not always be possible to anticipate what could go wrong at some point. There are forces of nature, beyond our control that determine how things turn out in the end. 4 Analytical Essay – Comparison and contrast of two texts References Hardy, T. (1912).
