SPRING 2021 ART HISTORY II FINAL EXAM ESSAYS DUE: WEDNESDAY, MAY 12, by 11:59PM For your Final Exam, you are to complete two of the following four essays. Each essay is worth 75 points, therefore, the 150-point Final Exam counts as one-quarter of your Final Grade. Please observe the following in order to receive full credit for your essays: 1. Read, understand, and then answer the question. You will lose points for not specifically addressing what the question is asking. It sounds elementary, but this is BY FAR the #1 way students lose points! 2. If the question has multiple parts, be sure to address each part. 3. It is very helpful AND saves time to create an outline of your answer before you begin to write; especially for addressing and organizing the individual elements of a question. An outline will also help you decide where any supplementary information should go. PLEASE read your essay aloud to yourself, or to another person, before turning it in. You will be able to hear where your writing doesn’t make sense, or can be worded more smoothly. 4. EACH of your essays should be AT LEAST one double-spaced page in length. Please do not go over two pages per essay. While a longer essay is not necessarily a better essay, where applicable, try to incorporate any relevant vocabulary terms; any supportive information about the artist and their technique; and any historical or other influences on the artist, so long as it relates back to the question and embellishes your answer in a meaningful way. (This IS a 75-point essay, remember!) *5. As always, provide a bibliography. As mentioned in a previous Announcement: organization, overall coherence, spelling, grammar and following proper format *WILL COUNT AGAINST YOUR GRADE! Please type double-spaced, and do not use a font greater than 14 pt. 6. If you quote a passage word-for-word from a source, and do not put it in direct quotations, you WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THAT ESSAY, as not doing so is plagiarizing! 7. Be sure to type your answer into a Word document. If you type directly into the allotted Assignment space, you risk losing your work! *If I cannot open the format of your attached essays, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT! If you have had this problem in the past, PLEASE CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY. 8. LATE ESSAYS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED! Thank you for your attention! _______________________________________________________________________________________ Essay 1: Throughout the semester, we have been looking at three primary types of paint. What are these three different paint mediums, and give an example (from three different chapters in Janson) of an artwork made in each type of paint. Be sure to state how the physical properties of each paint medium differ from the other two types; and how those differences affect each paintings’ form (or visual appearance). Describe visually in each of your three painting examples at least three specific areas that illustrate the different characteristics of each paint medium. Essay 2: Raphael’s School of Athens (1508-11) embodies several High Renaissance “ideals” in terms of BOTH philosophy and aesthetics. What are these ideals? In other words, how does the School of Athens function as a “visual collage of classical humanism”? Use specific examples you see in the fresco. Be sure to include what the role of at least one contemporary Renaissance and one ancient thinker was on art of the early sixteenth-?century. Essay 3: What was the Council of Trent and what sparked its formation? What changes did it impose, and what role did it assign to artwork? Consider how two different sculptural/architectural works done by Gianlorenzo Bernini for St.Peter’s Basilica fit into the context of the Council of Trent’s goals for the Catholic church. Essay 4. Giotto di Bondone is arguably considered the “godfather” of modern painting. Why? What were his four primary contributions to art and capturing the human spirit? Use a specific Giotto painting to describe these four contributions specifically. Then pick two additional painters that were influenced by Giotto, and using a specific painting by each artist, state with visual examples how they continued his tradition and/or innovated on his accomplishments.
