Please find a news article from a reputable news source that focuses on a public health topic of your interest and explore it in a one paragraph posting

Writing

Please find a news article from a reputable news source that focuses on a public health topic of your interest and explore it in a one paragraph posting. Acceptable news article sources for this class include: New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, BBC, Associated Press, and The New Yorker. The article cannot older than two weeks. You can use California Healthline to find topics, but these are not complete articles, you need to go to the links included and make sure the sources are reputable (most are). Please make a note in your posting that you chose an article through one of this outlet.

Please craft a one paragraph response (3-4 sentences) and make sure to establish the public health connection. You can expand if you are inclined to do so, but ensure that your writing is formal and proofread your posting. Upload a PDF of your chosen article along with your posting. You can edit your posting once you submit it.

A few notes: make sure the articles are articles and not opinion pieces or blogs and follow the assignment guidelines. The articles cannot be informational (fact sheet) or from a questionable source (wikipedia or webmd for examples). Make sure another student has not posted this same article or you will receive an automatic zero. There should be no duplication of topics and articles in this discussion; make sure no other student has posted your chosen article or the same exact specific topic.

note: I know COVID related topics may crop up more than once, but they need to focus on unrelated subthemes.

Current Issue Analysis Paper Guide

Overview

Public health events and problems are prevalent throughout the United States and worldwide. These events and problems can be associated with epidemics and the spread of disease, environmental disasters, community health care delivery, personal health behaviors, and more. The purpose of this written assignment is to understand and examine a public health event by choosing a recent main article, and make recommendations to remedy the identified problem. The student will select a recent public health event or problem from a peer-reviewed academic source and analyze the health problem defined in that main article.

Selection of Topic

The student is free to select any current public health event, ongoing problem, or concern that includes public health that has some dimension that is debatable, which is what makes this a public health issue paper. The student will use the main topic presented in the academic article chosen to frame the paper in order to examine this public health event, problem, or concern in various dimensions. The article needs to be published in an academic journal within the last six (6) months. Please do not choose the same exact topic as your health policy topic. Please keep in mind, the level of analysis in this paper should reflect that we are in the end of the first half of the semester, therefore you should incorporate the cumulative skills and knowledge gained since the beginning of the semester.

For the current issue paper, the main article, from which you will extract the health and public health problem, needs to come from a peer-reviewed academic journal. Examples include the American Journal of Public Health. For scholarly journals you can use the Onesearch or other databases accessible from the Oviatt library and they must be peer-reviewed articles and have a public health component. There is an Oviatt HSCI345 research or lib guideLinks to an external site. for additional information, there are various videos and guides to help you determine what is a peer-reviewing article from an academic journal for instance. The article cannot be informational (fact sheet) or from a questionable source (Wikipedia or WebMD for example). Check with the instructor is you want to use another source and are unsure about how appropriate it is for a particular assessment.

Paper Requirements

Three (3) pages using APA format and style; that is three pages for the body of the paper. This page length does NOT include the cover page, abstract, references, or appendix. The paper will include the following sections, each section starts on a new page: cover page, abstract, body (including introduction, cause and severity, intervention, recommendation, and conclusion sections, see below for what to include in each section), references, and appendix. If you are not submitting a word document file, please submit your assignment as a PDF and check your file. All papers will be submitted online via Turnitin.

Formatting: you will include the following sections in this order: cover page, abstract, body (3 pages with multiple sections), references, and appendix where you will include a portion of your main article (see below). The paper will include APA style headers reflecting the required elements for the paper (conclusion, cause and severity, etc.). You must cite every source in your paper in APA format in text and in the reference section. You must cite if paraphrasing, borrowing facts or information or including information that is beyond common knowledge. Not doing so constitutes plagiarism which will result in reporting students to student affairs. Do not use direct quotations in such a short paper.

Reference section: you will include a minimum of 6 references that are at most 5 years old (this is APA standard), except for the main article which needs to be less than 6 months old. The 6 required sources cannot come from class material (e.g., additional readings, the textbook).

You must include the minimum required references as follows:

1 main article source (peer-reviewed academic journal article)

2 statistical or data sources from a reputable source (e.g. a recent report published by the American Diabetes Association if you are working on a main article centered on type 2 diabetes)

3 academic/scholarly peer-reviewed sources (in addition to your main article)

*Check out the Resources section for more information on writing help, APA format and style, writing help and more. You will be further oriented in writing and research, but to be successful, students have to put in individual effort well before the deadline.

Paper content and grading rubric – 150 points total

Abstract (15 points): Provide a 150-250 word abstract as a single paragraph without paragraph indention. This is a brief summary of your paper (not the article). It allows readers to quickly glance at the main purpose of each section of your paper. Give the actual main points of your paper, rather that list the various sections in your paper. You may include a brief background of the health topic, but save the details for the introduction.

Introduction (25 points): Provide a summary of the article and an objective overview of the public health event/problem/concern: What event/problem/concern is the article highlighting? Describe the event. Why is this a public health event/problem/concern? Give general data about the event include at least one data/statistical source that is not from the article.  Indicate how this a public health topic and how this topic is debatable (e.g. why would it be a topic that might be contested or include various stakeholders that without an aligned perspective on the topic).

Cause and severity of the event (30 points): Discuss the causes and severity of the health issue: Who is affected? What are the current statistics on the event/problem/concern? What are the risk factors? Here you will include reputable data/statistical sources.

Intervention (30 points): How can this health event/problem/concern be prevented or the severity reduced? Identify public health agencies involved (or those that should be involved). What interventions are discussed? What steps are being taken to remedy and prevent the health event/problem/concern?  Here you may search for sources that focus on specific intervention programs for example.

Recommendations (25 points): Your detailed suggestions for additional prevention efforts to address this problem based on analysis (not personal belief or opinion). Your recommendations should directly reflect and be specifically supported by course readings and discussions. Make specific references to these readings (and please cite them).

Conclusion (10 points): Conclusions wrap up what you have been discussing in your paper. After moving from general to specific information in the introduction and body paragraphs, your conclusion should begin pulling back into more general information that restates the main points of your argument. Conclusions may also call for action or overview future possible research.

Mechanics (15 points): Sentence structure, grammar, spelling, and appropriate APA style. Formatting of the assignment. A complete reference section with the minimum requirements (see section above). Include an appendix with the first complete page of your main article; i.e., this should include all elements of required for the citation, the article abstract and usually a section of the introduction. Overall effort and quality of the work submitted.
