INTRODUCTION

Good leadership does not just happen. A skilled leader is one who demonstrates the ability to conduct a meeting where the members feel safe and that they have a voice. A common question in group work is: Who owns the group? An ineffective group leader would believe he or she is the group owner. In reality, the group members are the ones who should own the group. This should be their safe place and their opportunity to solve problems. If the group leader is working too hard, it implies that the group is not working.

This unit looks at leadership skills and how they are utilized effectively.

Assignment Description

For your assignment, imagine the following scenario:

You have been accepted as a student in a special seminar on the formation and ongoing dynamics of a therapy group. As part of the seminar, you will participate in an observation activity. While playing the role of the supervisor, observe and analyze the facilitators' performance, and then offer comments, ask questions, and make suggestions in relation to how the facilitators handle the aspects in question.

Assignment Instructions

Your assignment should include the following:

•             Short summary of the sessions.

•             Part 1: Group Engagement.

o             Description of all four observation parameters, noting specific strengths and suggestions for improvement:

o             Facilitator efforts to create a strong group foundation in the first session.

o             Facilitator use of empathy and other interpersonal skills.

o             Facilitator use of self-regulation to monitor personal values, beliefs, and behaviors that could limit effectiveness.

o             Facilitator recognition of diversity within the group.

o             Handling of co-facilitation.

•             Part 2: Group Authority.

o             Description of all three observation parameters, noting specific strengths and suggestions for improvement:

o             Facilitator efforts to help the group define what makes a group meeting successful for them.

o             Facilitation of discussion around confidentiality.

o             Facilitation of understanding who has the authority in the group therapy setting.

•             Conclusion.

o             Analysis of facilitators' overall performance.
