Subject Learning Outcomes

2. Utilise research to create inclusive systems, cultures and/or programs to support the self-determination, well-being and success of autistic and neurodivergent individuals across the lifespan.

3. Implement actions to facilitate collaborations with parents, professionals and autistic and neurodivergent individuals to establish interdisciplinary communities of practice.

5. Employ counselling and case management skills as needed to support autistic and neurodivergent individuals with a range of diagnoses and their families in different contexts.

Task

Students will demonstrate how a collaborative community of practice engages in a change process to develop innovative programs, structures and strategies to support the inclusion and achievement of autistic and neurodivergent individuals at critical points in the lifespan. To complete this assignment, students may utilise a pre-formulated scenario or they may construct their own case study demonstrating how a school or organisation engages with the autistic and neurodivergent community and families to undertake change processes resulting in sustainable and meaningful impact for autistic and neurodivergent individuals and will demonstrate how they may utilise counselling and case management skills as needed to empower individuals with neurodiverse conditions and their families as self-advocates and problem solvers in different settings

Assessment Criteria

Students will:

1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research.

2. Ability to analyse and apply research to practice.

3. Communicate information in a coherent and logical manner, utilising appropriate structure and grammar.

4. Utilise recent, relevant, high quality research in APA 6 format to substantiate viewpoints.

In this assessment, you will construct a case study of a group that has identified a key issue and created a community of practice to initiative change within a community, organisation, or school to support related to facilitate the inclusion, self-determination, agency and success of neurodivergent individuals. Ideally you will base this case study on an issue you have dealt with or identified in real life, but a scenario can be provided if needed. It is suggested that you focus on a particular issue in a particular setting related to facilitating meaningful social change for individuals on the autism spectrum or with other neurodivergent conditions. For example, a group of parents, teachers and students on the autism spectrum are concerned about the issues that students on the autism spectrum face in being included as they move into secondary school settings.

You have flexibility to demonstrate knowledge and present the case study in a range of ways. Please make sure that is referenced. If you use video, make sure the link and brief description/references is included in document you submit.

In this study, you will utilise the research we have discussed (i.e. change processes, communities of practice, inclusive practice, collaborative problem solving, counselling/case management and innovative solutions and practice) to detail how the community of practice came together to address a specific problem and undertook learning and implemented actions to create new practice for neurodivergent individuals. You will need to consider how you establish ethical and equitable collaborations with autistic or neurodivergent individuals and their families in a way that empower them as agents of change. Please remember that although you can base this on real life scenarios or problems, the desired community of practice may need to go beyond the people who traditionally would be involved to the people who need to be involved.:

Note: Please use sub-heading of the following points and make the case study of group creative and attractive (Use tables, pictures, etc) in your work.

In your case study, you should provide the following:

  1. A description of the initial issue and an explanation of why this presents a problem related to inclusion, agency and self-determination of neurodivergent individuals and their families.
  2. A detailed discussion of how the CoP undertakes learning and engages together to create new practice that would create change to address the initial problem.  Please include the following:
    1. A discussion of how the community of practice develops including the roles that each member assumed within the community.
    2. A description of the Community of Practice’s domain (purpose), community (ways of working) and practice (the result or practice created or want to create).
    3. The ways in which the group considers barriers and takes steps to ensure equity of participation and voice of neurodivergent individuals and their families in group interactions and processes.
    4. The stages the COP goes through as they initiate and undertake change processes.
    5. The ways in which individuals act as leaders to facilitate learning and change of practice.
    6. The steps the CoP undertakes to develop learning and gain knowledge to initiate change (cognitive processes)
    7. The activities the CoP use to work together and interact with each other to understand and instigate the change process.(social processes)
    8. The ways the CoP draw on research and utilise critical friends/outside experts to inform their decisions and actions.
    9. The learning that is generated and solutions and practice that are created or could be created.
    10. The ways in which the change processes address the individual goals of its members and the collective goals of the group.
    11. The ways in which the CoP considers ethical issues and takes steps to ensure that changes made are both sustainable and socially valid (meaningful) for neurodivergent individuals and their families.
    12. the ways in which the change process and practices that are created facilitate inclusion and empowerment of neurodivergent individuals to be exercise agency as decision makers and/or leaders in their communities.
  3. The ways in which case management or counselling may be used to strengthen the implementation of new practice or problem solving for neurodivergent individuals and families.

Through your case study you need to show how the group engages in learning processes, how they worked together, and how they create sustainable and meaningful practice to support the inclusion, achievement and voice of individuals on the autism spectrum. Make sure you demonstrate how all the members were involved and remember that equity of involvement is important. The items above do not need to be presented in order, but do need to be included in the case study. Some of these items may overlap.

You also need to show your understanding of the research we have discussed and have drawn on this to inform your decisions and discussion. For example, when you discuss the stages of change the group went through, the learning they developed, and the practices that need to be implemented while referencing and linking to relevant research on CoPs and change

You can be creative in the way you present this. It does not need to be a paper and you can use pictures, tables, charts, videos, or other means to present the information. However, please make sure to provide references from research for the decisions you make. You will also need to provide a reference list at the end.

Remember the purpose of this assessment is to provide a detailed discussion of how a CoP could really engage in change processes to create meaningful social change and sustainable practice that empower neurodivergent individuals to exercise agency in their communities.

  • Make sure you demonstrate understanding of relevant research on key concepts and ability to apply these concepts in practice. Check the marking rubric to see the concepts that are being assessed.
  • This is not an essay so you have flexibility to demonstrate knowledge in different ways. Just make sure you reference somehow.
  • Submit one document, either Word or PDF.
  • Make sure you use the submission document. You may merge in one PDF using PDFMerge on the internet.
  • Make sure it is double spaced.
  • 25 pages max
  • Use APA 7 referencing
