Step 1: Right to Universal Health Care debate 2021

The Argument:

Should All Americans Be Entitled (have the right) to Universal Health Care?

“Proponents of the right to health care say that no one in the richest nation on earth should go without health care. They argue that a right to health care would stop medical bankruptcies, improve public health, reduce overall health care spending, help small businesses, and that health care should be an essential government service.” (pro/con.org)

“Opponents argue that a right to health care amounts to socialism and that it should be an individual's responsibility, not the government's role, to secure health care. They say that government provision of health care would decrease the quality and availability of health care, and would lead to larger government debt and deficits.” (pro/con.org)

whole heartedly believe that every person in the United States, whether they are a citizen or not should be entitled to Universal Health Care. By not providing health care to everyone at no expense causes an increase in unnecessary serious injuries and death because many people fear the financial repercussions of hospital visits. On the website, Healthcare ProCon, Pro number 3 mentions that Universal Heath Care will save lives. They state, "According to a study from Harvard researchers, "lack of health insurance is associated with as many as 44,789 deaths per year," which translates into a 40% increased risk of death among the uninsured". This means that by not implementing Universal Health Care we are allowing people to die unnecessarily as they feel there is no other option since they have no insurance. Another reason as to why all persons in the U.S. should be entitled to Universal Health Care is the fact that it could make Health Care affordable to all. On the same aforementioned website, they state that, "A 2018 survey published by Becker's Healthcare found that 22% of Americans found paying their deductible was "very difficult" or "impossible" and 64% reported that they delayed or did not seek medical care due to cost". This reaffirms that many people in the U.S. do not seek the healthcare they need due to cost but it also confirms that if we rid the unnecessary cost of Health Care we can make it affordable to every person. Finally, the establishment of Universal Health Care can improve the public health of the communities around the United States. The website Healthcare Procon states, "According to a study in the Lancet that looked at data from over 100 countries, "evidence suggests that broader health coverage generally leads to better access to necessary care and improved population health, particularly for poor people". To me, this equates that with more accessible Heath Care there will be less hospital and clinical as people will become healthier with more access to the care that they need. Ultimately, Universal Health Care will benefit all of the U.S. citizens and those who live here. ProCon.org. (2019, February 14). Right to Health Care - Pros & Cons - ProCon.org. Right to Health Care. https://healthcare procon.org/ I firmly believe all Americans are entitled to Universal Health Care. My foremost reason for believing this is the fact that health care is a recognized human right. In addition, healthcare for people could help save lives and make medical services affordable for most people. The United States signed the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948. In this document states that "everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of oneself and one's family, including... medical care" (ProCon.org, 2019). Unfortunately, I know many people who still can not afford a doctor's visit or copay. My diabetes medication alone cost $1,180 for one box of insulin. This is medication that I can not live without, so I had to get insurance so that I was able to take care of my health. This is one case, and I have heard of much worse situations. The "The United States is the only OECD nation which does not have universal health care either in practice or by constitutional right"(ProCon.org, 2019). As a nation that has so much nationalism, we need to do better where it matters. If we live in a country of unwell people we can not be concerned with other political problems because we are all concerned with our well being. Healthcare for all could help save lives. 44,789 deaths are associated with a lack of health insurance annually. It was "found that due to a lack of timely and effective health care, the United States ranked at the bottom of a list of 16 rich nations in terms of preventable mortality"(ProCon.org, 2019). That is a large number of preventable deaths because of a lack of insurance. If medical services were available to everyone in the United States we could have a much healthier population. Unfortunately, paying for health services is one of the most prominent financial issues in US households. In a 2018 survey it was found that “64% of Americans) reported that they delayed or did not seek medical care due to cost"(ProCon.org, 2019). When over half of the population is not receiving medical care due to cost, there is a problem. We need to have more affordable health care or have health insurance available for more citizens so that people can get the services that they need. ProCon.org. (2019, February 14).
