A good example of osmosis in real life would be slugs and salt. Once the salt enters the slugs body, water is extracted from the slug and into the atmosphere (out of the cell membrane) which results in the slug dying. This causes a high concentration of water the cell normally has to none due to the salt.
Addition of the salt results in a high solute concentration. Osmosis as a transport mechanism involves the movement of solvent (water) molecules from where they are highly concentrated to where they are lowly concentrated.
As such, the slug loses water because of the high solute (salt) concentration. As such, the slug becomes dehydrated and eventually dies.
