1) A. Where does the story begin and end?

The story begins in the city of UR or present-day Iraq. It is bout the ancient object called the standard of UR. An object used in burial rituals. It is a small box that is elaborately decorated.

The end of the story focuses on the victory of the King from the battle which seems to be taking place. Prisoners of war can be seen walking naked stripped of their belongings.

B. How is the story organized?

The story is well organized and focuses on the importance of information. It tackles first the origin of the standard of Ur and the organizations that led the excavation. After that, the story discussed the Royal graves of Ur, which is a significant find that allows us to understand more about their funerary culture and rites. The next part focuses on the standard of UR, a small object that is well detailed and lavishly decorated. The last part is the Queen's lyre, another burial object.

C. How can we identify figures of greater importance and less importance?

We can identify the figures of greater importance and lesser importance by their status, decorations, and features. For example, the King in the standard of UR is depicted with a much bigger body and head. He often wears elaborate and luxurious clothing compared to other figures. He was also an inch taller than the other figures, almost all of the figures were walking or leaning towards his direction thus symbolizing the importance of his existence.

Those figures of lesser importance are often depicted with a poor state of clothing and smaller stature. It is evident with the prisoners of war seen on the standard of UR, they are wearing tattered clothing or almost naked; they are also wounded and bleeding (as characterized by the reddish color on the figures). There is a sense of humiliation due to their enslavement.

2. Three possible functions were discussed in the video. Name two of the possible functions of the object.

The two possible functions of the standard of Ur are ceremonial or burial rites. It is intentionally buried to be part of the series of rites when a person especially an important one passes. The other function hypothesized is that is tied or found in a pole then brought into battle.

3. Generally speaking, there is more evidence of ancient cultures in the form of burial/grave goods than the ruins of their residences. Can you give two possible reasons for that?

Ancient societies often believed in life after death. In order to make sure that the journey of the person to the afterlife is smooth and successful, they usually perform burial rites. The rites include burying personal possessions, offering to the gods, and sacrificial people.

Another reason is to ensure that they live a luxurious and comfortable life thus resulting in the death of their loyal servant along with them.
