**You will be responsible for:
-Choosing 1-2 pages from the assigned reading to close-read.
-Briefly summarize the main points in your selected passage. What main arguments or points are offered? What primary and secondary sources does the author draw from?
What scholarly conversations is the author participating in? Any quotations that stand out to you, and that you can unpack? What questions are posed or evoked? Are there any
sources you can find that you can connect to your chosen passage?
-You will present and/or read your close reading response to your classmates on your chosen day (5-10 minutes) and submit to me via email a written 750-word close
reading of the passage by midnight on the day before you present.
**Here are the points you should keep in mind when writing your 750-word close reading response, and also while preparing your 5-10 minute presentation:
-Choose at least a page, and no more than two pages from assigned reading for that day. You can focus on an audio and/or visual aspect of that day's assignments, if there are
any. Try to choose a sufficient segment or example that will generate a 5—7-minute presentation and 750 words of writing that will help you and the rest of the class consider
some of the important historical topics and ideas in the History of the Spanish Caribbean.
-With your excerpt, take note of main or interesting points or historical events narrated/represented, arguments, other important details or questions posed or evoked, primary
and/or secondary source evidence used (look at footnotes), historical contexts, or anything else that stands out to you. In the 750-word written portion of the assignment, take
some time to unpack some of these things.
- Make 1-2 connections to other readings for that day. What are some of the conversations you can create between your passage, and the other materials for that day?
-Lastly, make at least one connection to another reading or conversation we have had in class. How does this passage connect to the larger historical narrative we are
learning and re-creating in this class?
-Please use Chicago Manual style footnotes for any other source you mention (the manual is online and on QC Library website). | will soend some time going over the basics in
class.
*| recommend that as you work on this assignment, you set a timer and work for 30 minutes at a time, with a 5 minute break in between. Start by freewriting the answers to each
of the questions above, and then read over your work aloud a few times, each time making revisions and corrections, rewording, and adding relevant details, quotations, and
citiations.
