Instructions

FOR THE ASSIGNMENT, RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING RFP, FOLLOWING ALL DIRECTIONS. Applications [assignments] not submitted in compliance with the formatting will not be scored [graded]. *This is intentional. It mimics grant submission guidelines—a funder will have very specific instructions for how you submit the application, and if you do not follow those, you will risk not having your proposal considered or scoring very poorly because you did not follow the formatting requirements.

Approved LOI—Invitation to Submit RFP 2020

Congratulations! Based upon your recent LOI, the agency you applied to invites you to submit your proposal. The agency will award up to 10 grants this year. Grants are awarded for 1-, 2-, or 3-year cycles and may be between $100,000 and $500,000. Successful applicants must meet all eligibility criteria and complete the RFP packet to specification. Your proposal will be electronically submitted as one PDF document with a table of contents, as indicated below.

For your LOI, you identified an open grant opportunity from a foundation, corporation, or other philanthropic entity that supports work closely aligned with your area of interest.

Please provide a link to the call for proposal or webpage that lists the grant opportunity.

Your grant proposal should address the following. For the proposal, each section should be single spaced, with 12-point font and 1-inch margins all around. Each section after the cover letter should begin with the title of the project and the section title.

  1. Brief Cover Letter. Introduces the project (please refer to your LOI, paragraph 1); provides the requisite information about the amount of funding you are requesting from RCF and over what time period you are requesting the funding; indicates whether this is a new or continuation project (may be continuing an RCF-funded project or project funded by other mechanisms); and highlights innovation and connectivity to our core principles.
  2. Need Statement (1–2 pages, single spaced). Utilize appropriate statistics and data to support your cause. Graphics may be embedded into the document or may be submitted as Appendices. If submitted as an appendix, you must adequately reference the material in the need statement and refer to the named appendix and provide its page number within the packet. Your need statement should provide a compelling rationale for your project and its impact within the community. This is inclusive of community and individual information. References should be included in this document. The RCF utilizes APA formatting for in-text citations and a reference list with minor exceptions: references should be placed at the end of the document, not on an additional page, and may be single spaced. In-text references should follow APA guidelines, as should tables, graphics, etc.
  3. Innovation and Evidence (1–2 pages, single spaced). Utilize appropriate references to demonstrate that you are utilizing an innovative approach to community change and that your approach is supported by evidence from the field/the literature within the field. Broadly speaking, we would like to see that you have done your research and that you are utilizing best practices. Change efforts should empower and elevate communities and their members. Demonstrate competency/understanding of the academic literature and best practices in your discipline. References should be included in this document. Please see above for details on formatting.
  4. Proposed Grant Activities, Timeline, and Evaluation Plan (2–3 pages, single spaced, including a visual timeline of grant activities). For this section of the grant you should detail the proposed activities, outcomes, and plans for evaluating them. How will your activities meet the overall goals of the program, and how do those dovetail with the foundation's core values? This fills out the details of the "what" and "how" and the evaluation plan you submitted with your LOI. In this section, be sure to articulate measurable outcomes for your activity(ies) and link those outcomes to the foundation's core values.
  5. Budget. Utilize the budget worksheet provided (here). Please submit your budget as a single page. The budget justification narrative should follow on a separate page and should include a discussion of matching source(s). Additionally, the narrative should address the viability of the activities (should they continue) after the grant cycle. Only include categories that are applicable to your proposal.
  6. Collaborative Partners and Credentials (1 page). Detail collaborative partners and credentials of the team to implement the work presented.

All elements of the proposal are submitted as one PDF file, clearly labeled with the name of the person submitting and the title of the project—e.g., "Loeffler Community Gardening in Lexington Re-imagined."

The packet should be in this order:

  1. Cover Letter
  2. Table of Contents
  3. Parts 1–6
  4. Any Appendices
