  1. What are the three functions of skin?

*communication with the outside world
*secretion of sweat to cool the body and oil to keep it from drying out
*protection from harmful microorganisms and chemicals

  1. Describe the three layers of the skin

*epidermis - the part of the skin that is exposed to the environment; composed of squamous cells and germinative cells; contains melanocytes
*dermis - the most complex layer of the skin; contains collagen and elastin fibers that give skin its elasticity; houses nerve endings, blood vesssels, hair follicles, and sebaceous glands
*subcutaneous layer - fatty layer of loose connective tissue that binds the skin to the underlying organs; acts as both an insulator and a shock absorber

  1. How do sweat glands help your body maintain a stable internal environment?

Sweat glands help regulate body temperature (the body is cooled as sweat evaporates) and help remove nitrogenous wastes and mineral salts from the blood.

  1. List the organs of the excretory system.

kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra; also sweat glands, lungs, large intestine

  1. How is the activity of the kidneys regulated?

*Kidney activity is increased by an enzyme called renin, which the kidneys secrete to raise blood pressure; the increased blood presure causes more blood to be filtered.
*The amount of reabsorption is controlled by teh hypothalamus of the brain through ADH (anti-diuretic hormone), which signals the kidneys to reabsorb more water.

  1. What is the difference between endocrine and exocrine glands?

Endocrine glands manufacture and secrete their products into the blood; exocrine glands manufacture and secrete their products to the outside of the body.

  1. Which gland is called the master gland of the body? Why?

*the pituitary gland
*It affects the other endocrine glands.

  1. What hormone is responsible for preparing your body for emergency situations?

epinephrine (adrenaline)

  1. What are the two types of gametes?

sperm cells, egg cells

  1. What hormone triggers the production of sperm cells?

testosterone

  1. List the three primary germ layers and the structures into which each develops

*ectoderm (outer layer) - nervous system, sensory organs, skin
*mesoderm (middle layer) - many of the internal organs including muscle, bone, blood, lymph vessels, reproductive organs), skin
*endoderm (inner layer) - digestive organs, respiratory tract urinary bladder, urethra

  1. How can you avoid the problems caused by sexual impurity?

abstain from sexual relations before marriage and remain faithful in marriage

  1. Identity the three layers of skin

epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous layer

  1. Identity two hormones produced by the islets of langerhans in the pancreas that help regulate blood sugar

insulin, glucagon

  1. Identity the hormone produced by the pineal gland that makes you feel sleepy

melatonin

  1. How do nephrons filter molecules of waste from the blood

Each nephron consists of a glomerulus, a Bowman's capsule, and a renal tubule surrounded by capillaries. As blood flows through the capillaries of the glomerulus, some of the water and small moleules in the blood escape from the capillaries through the perforated walls. The fluid that escapes from the blood is collected by the Bowman's capsule and flows into the renal tubule, where water and useful molecules are reabsorbed into the blood. The waste products are left behind in the renal tubule, dissolved in a small amount of water. The water and dissolved wastes (known as urine) drain out of the nephron to the bladder for later expulsion from the body.
