Instructions: Initial Post Est. time for completion: 240 minutes Stage 1: Review Readings and Pick A Theory (By 11:59 pm PST, Monday, 5/10) 1. Review the Module 6 Readings on Social Stratification Theories Select one of the following major theories to research and present to your peers: • Conflict Theory • Functionalist theory (aka Structural Functionalism) . Symbolic Interactionism (aka Interactionist theory) You will be addressing explaining one of these major sociological theories on social stratification to your peers. 2. Let Your Group Know Which Theory Group You Will Focus On . After selecting a theory: • Post your choice in the group discussion forum. o keep in mind: • First come, first serve. . Only one student may present on each theory. Stage 2: Research & Present (By 11:59 PM PST, Monday, 5/17) 1. Conduct Your own Research on your Selected Theory Read section 9.4 in the Openstax e text and Theories of Stratification - that deal with your chosen theory. . Look for videos, articles, podcasts, wiki entries, or any other resource that may help you clarify your understanding . Outside sources are encouraged! 2. Address the following: 1. OVERVIEW - Give an overview of the theory (i.e. a concise explanation of the theory). . 1 - 2 slides . You should describe the general ideas and assumptions of the theory you are covering here. • The learner should be able to grasp the basic idea of the theory from this section 2. APPLICATION - Discuss how this theory or sub-theory can be used to analyze a social issue, problem, or phenomenon of your choosing related to social inequality. • 1-4 slides . This is where you will demonstrate how the theory can be applied/used to explain something occurring in society. • Think about current or historical social problems or issues that you are interested in, reading about, exploring in other classes, or would like to learn more about. This is where you will apply the theory to social stratification, social inequality, and/or poverty. • Ideas for application include making comparisons between nations or cultures, analyzing a social issue occurring inside of the US, or explaining trends in social inequality using theory. 3. CRITIQUE - Discuss the advantages and drawbacks of this theory. • 1-2 slides . What are this theory's strengths? What are it's weaknesses? Is the theory more useful for explaining one type of issue/problem vs. another type? 3. Create Your Teach Back Content • Your Goal is to teach your peers about this theory as the Subject Matter Expert . You should create a presentation, not a research paper . Use bullet points or short sentences to make your point--avoid full paragraphs or long explanations • Think about including audio narration or video to expand on your written materials . Consider how you would like to present your content. Considerations include: . Text directly in post • Document (e.g., Word, PDF, etc.) • PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, Keynote or another presentation tool • Link: How to create video narration in Power Pointe • Audio/Video -- Screencasting (create a short video presentation), phone recording, webcam, audio file, etc. • Easy tool for creating screen recordings : https://screencast-o-matic.com/ • Any other multi-media platform you would like to use. • Create your content based on your delivery method. 4. Post Your Assignment . You should post your presentation and/or materials into your group's discussion forum • Discussion forums allow for attachments (including ppt and word docs), images, audio, video, and other types of media to be included. • If you use Google products, Prezi, or another web-based tool, make sure to make your content shareable. 5. Use the Following Guidelines • Post your presentation in the original discussion forum as text directly in the discussion forum, as a video, an audio recording, a google doc, or in whatever format you think is best as a teaching tool. . You will be selecting, researching, and presenting/teaching a major sociological theory social stratification/inequality and applying theory to a social issue/problem/phenomenon of your choosing (related to social inequality, poverty, etc.) for your group members for this activity. Step 1 Please reply to this post by Monday, 5/10 to let your group know which theory (Functionalist, Conflict, or Symbolic Interactionist) you would like to research and present on. First Come, First Serve: If someone else in the group has already posted that they wish to research the same theory group, then you must pick a different one. Note: If you are in a group of 4, two group members will have the same topic. Step 2 Begin researching your selected theory (after making sure no other group member has chosen it) and creating your presentation.
